The vinegar thing always turned me off from trying McC. I may have to give the CC blends a go as my tastes have changed and i'm pretty much a straight Va and VaBur fan.

And kudos to your CC stockpiling ! The stuff appears to be as precious as gold and silver.

Personally I've always found the ketchup smell to be a "tin note" more than anything, after you dry it out (to that Va "crispness") it's a faint hint of vinegar at most and you definitely don't get it at all in the smoke. If you're a Virginia fan, I gotta urge you to at least try it.

Agree with this. Maybe the first few puffs have a sour vinegar note but after a few it’s unnoticeable

Thanks for the comments. Sounds like people who like CC are sorta vintage agnostic. Makes sense, perhaps a blend for experienced smokers who know their VA flakes.

I opened my first tin this year. It was 2014 and was also my first ever McClelland product. The ketchup thing is no joke! I find it levels off a bit after it has had a chance to breathe. Interesting spice notes. I was not really impressed with the first bowl, but it keeps getting better each time I pack a bowl.

I smoked through of tin of 2010 (I think), but I don’t remember many details other than I really liked it.
I currently have a tin of 2014 open. It’s very sweet with a ton of midrange complexity, and not many high or bass notes to it. Tangy, malty, and bready with some cinnamon/cake spice notes that pop in and out. Just a little bit of spiciness. I’ve got one more tin of 2014 left, and the day of my CC stash is all 2016 and 2017.

Can anyone comment on the prep and pipe they like to use for Christmas Cheer? I opened a 2013 tin several years ago and jarred it. I smoked some last weekend, and didn't have a great smoke. I like McClelland 2015 and Beacon Extra, but I feel like I'm doing something wrong with CC.

How much did you dry the flakes prior to packing and smoking. There's a lot of excess moisture in those flakes and that excess moisture masks flavors.

I rubbed them out and let them dry for 20 minutes or so. They didn't seem damp but I'll dry them a little longer next time.

20 minutes isn't nearly enough. These flakes hold more moisture than one realizes. I live in a dry climate and I give them an hour or more. It's not about a specific length of time, but a level of moisture. I'm looking for just this side of bone dry, dry to the touch when squeezed betwixt thumb and index finger, no feeling of coolness or moisture against my skin when squeezed, but still pliant. That's when I get the most flavor. Then I gravity feed the rubbed out flake into the bowl and tamp lightly. I sprinkle a little bit of finely rubbed out flake over the top to act as kindling, fire it up, and I'm good to go.

I'll go for drier next time. They still felt a little cool but not damp, if that makes sense.

I have never minded the aroma of Xmas cheer. In fact I like it. Ketchup? Perhaps but that's not really what I get. But I do mind that it can nip me like mean poodle. Still not going to give up on it. All these Xmas cheer fans can't be wrong...

Some people really get bit by Reds, some even reporting that Red Virginia feels like a flamethrower. Fortunately I'm not one of them, so I can enjoy my pleasures without the requisite suffering.

Sadly I'm one of those people. Christmas Cheer was too taxing on my tongue to get heavy into it.
