chasing', don't know whether to get one each of the Cheer -- I have 2015 aging -- or to order an 8 oz. Black Frigate. Both, you say, but I smoke really slowly (moderately) and have tins of various blends on hand from four or five years ago, so I feel like this may be a choice of one. Since you are the high priest of Black Frigate on Forums, which would you choose?

For the time being, I would go with the Christmas Cheer just for lack of future availability. Black Frigate has been on the market since the late '90s, and in no immediate danger of going extinct.

2017 seems to be much smaller batches. The first run was about half the number of 2016.

Thanks for the info, chase. I didn't know that Black Frigate had been around that long. I prefer fuller strength blends and BF fills that profile. I admit I'd rather get comfortable with a blend that bids to be around in the future rather than chase all the ones that won't. But I have, and will lay in, some of the good ones that may not remain on the market. At least I'll put off opening my Cheer 15 for another year or two. I like that it's based on Carolina leaf.

I was lucky to grab a few tins of the 2016 and the 2017. I really hope these aren't the last years of this fabled release. I have at least one tin cellared for every year - from 1992 to present (as you may know, CC was not produced in 1993).

I am looking for Christmas Cheer 2016 as well. Anyone have a tin or two to sell?

Check smokingpipes.com on Mondays and Thursdays at 3:30 PM EST. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of it yet.

For those who have tried it - are the flakes difficult to prepare (like 2035, dark star)?

I haven't opened the 16 or 17, but prior vintages are what I would call a typical McClelland flake. Much easier to prepare than Dark Star, which is like a bunch of solid black burnt chunks in a tin. OF course once you've mastered preparing Dark Star, it is a wonderful smoke.
