Ok, this question could go here or in the tobacco section, but I’ll put it here as it seems more suited for this question.

I am looking to get more into Gawith stuff. From what I hear, 1792 will supposedly ghost a pipe. Ennerdale will ghost a pipe. What about Coniston? Any other blends by them that I will need to dedicate a pipe to?

So here is the main question: I understand that wide chamber vs. small chamber ultimately comes down to preference, but for these blends, would people mostly prefer wide chambers or small chambers? I also understand that something like 1792 is different than Ennerdale, so I would be curious what people think before I start dedicating pipes.

Cheers

None of them will ghost a pipe. There you go. People are pantywastes about this IMO

Pick a pipe you already enjoy. Once you smoke 1792 most other blends will seem inferior.

Joking aside, I would pick a pipe that you already get pleasure from after trying the blends out in a cob to see what you like. I smoke 1792 in cobs and a dedicated briar. Most other Lakelands I smoke in pipes that see various Lakeland blends for the most part, but I have deviated from this time to time. If you clean out your pipes well, especially the shank, an occasional bowl of a foreign blend will have no major lasting effects.

I was very diligent with cleaning on my first couple of briars and have no ghosts in them today. These are pipes that saw many bowls of Mixture 79 and Sail Green in between Sir Walter Raleigh, OGS, Carter Hall, Old Dublin, and other less topped/cased blends that were smoked in those same pipes.

Don't over think it.

I never worry about it, stuff, light, smoke, tamp...stuff, light, smoke, tamp, nowhere in there does it say you have to worry about "ghosting"

Agree with @BROBS it's much harder to ghost a pipe than people think, if you're smoking straight Lat Bombs and then want to enjoy a pure virginia, yeah, you might get enough latakia ghost coming through to affect the taste, but very unlikely otherwise.

Either people online are just a bit soft (otherwise we'd be having these arguments in person!) or it's as if people are trying to sell you a lot of pipes or something...

I've noticed some faint ghosting a few times over the years. I dedicate by genre with a few blends getting their own pipes. Off the top of my head those blends are Rum Flake, Black Frigate, Virginia Slices and Three Friars.
I have some Lakelands that I have dabbled with by smoking in cobs. I am going to select a briar or 2 to be Lakeland dedicated. Not so much because of fear of other blends being ghosted, I am thinking more along the lines of enhancing subtle flavors. I use this same theory with Rum Flake and Virginia Slices since they both have some very subtle nuances

So far for me, Coniston Cut Plug has been the only blend that has earned itself limited pipe exposure. I was trying to enjoy some burley flake in one of my meers recently and wondered if perhaps my wife had secretly cleaned the cat box with it beforehand. I love Coniston by the way.

That's funny. If I knew a single other pipe smoker, other than online acquaintances, I would certainly be talking about this with them. Maybe it's where I live or my age, but I rarely ever see anyone smoking a pipe, other than a passing car from time to time.

I'm one of those who is super aware of smells, everywhere and it drives me crazy. I wish my sense of smell wasn't so bright.

So, OP, if tobacco cross overs don't typically bother you, than I would agree that there is little risk in trying a few bowls of some of these in any of your pipes. But if you have any concern, and it sounds like you do, I would be buying some cheap cobs to see if you like this stuff. Just keep in mind that some cobs smoke really sweet out of the gate and settle down after 3-4 bowls. So much that so, I was buying new cobs to smoke EGR because it was such a good matching for me. Then I got over it and realized I liked EGR in any of my pipes.

Good luck...

Yes this is how I am as well though, I know I am not as experienced as the great majority of you. I also have five pipes in all, at the moment.
