As you may have heard from Brian's radio show, there's a new American pipe factory: Briar Works, located in Nashville, TN. I was lucky enough to have the winning bid on the very first Briar Works pipe available to the public, this black blasted sitter from their Icarus line.
I've only smoked this pipe once, but it's nicely balanced, quite light given the amount of wood that's usually needed for a sitter, and has a well shaped, comfortable stem. As many of you know, I collect North American artisan-made pipes almost exclusively. But if this is what "factory pipes" have become, I may be able to save myself a LOT of money in the future!

And just to make it official, Briar Works honcho (and artisan pipe maker)Pete Prevost stamped it #1 to signify it being the first pipe sold to the public.

Nice! I was very impressed with them at the show. IMO at this price point I'd pass on a Sav, Pete or Stan for one of these pipes. 8O

Actually Phil, the stem is black. The tortoise effects are just a trick of the light (and my mediocre photography skills).

I agree, the shapes in the new line are fantastic! Fit and finish will never rival the better hand made pipes but for the price brands like Stanwell and Savinelli have a whale of a competitor on their hands.

It's also going to make it tougher for new pipe makers with similar fit and finish, in a similar price range, but without the awesome shapes.

Hell I was really tempted to try to buy one Todd was showing Friday, and I could make about anything I want for myself!

It's hard to believe that is a factory pipe! That shape reminds of an Askwith. Hearing the radio show, I was a little skeptical, but praise from you is high praise indeed and the pictures speak for themselves.

My understanding is that they're being distributed by Music City Marketing and together they're lining up retailers right now. So I guess we should just stand by.

Pretty sweet. Hopefully this brand will take off and that pipe becomes "priceless." It may take a generation or two, but you never know.

The Icarus and Neptune pipes looked awesome on the tables in Chicago, but it was a heckuva tease to not be able to buy one. There would have been two in the GTA had the pipes been for sale. That being said, Pete and Rita were awesome to meet. I've had emails back and forth with them, as we're considering using them for our club's first POTY. As I understand it, both lines are currently being shopped to retailers and distribution companies, and should be available for purchase from B&Ms before the end of the year. For more info, listen to the Radio Show for the week leading up to Chicago.
Congrats on the win, Bigvan, I'm glad someone here won the pipe.

This company has a very nice website, but with two glaring exceptions: 1) where are pictures of the pipes, and 2) should one so desire, how does one purchase a pipe?
Hey Perique,
Just by way of explanation, our current site is primarily intended to be informative--it should provide a lot of information about the pipes and the dedicated team of pipe-people behind them. It is not intended to be a retail website, or even a "product showcase" website. We are currently building sites both for Neptune Briars and Icarus Pipes, and both sites will offer photos and descriptions of our two flagship lines. As you can all imagine, building a full-scale pipe factory from the ground up is a monumental endeavor, and we've been overwhelmed by the response to the pipes, so we're chipping away at things on all fronts, but it will be a month or so before the interactive shape catalogs will be "live." In the mean time, rest assured that we're working hard to get pipes to our distributors and retailers around the world. By year's end, you should be able to buy Neptune or Icarus in one of 1500+ tobacconists across the globe.
One of the things that sets us apart from other pipe brands, however, is that a $150 Neptune will cost you exactly $150 at a large online retailer, and exactly $150 at your local brick-and-mortor tobacconist. Above all, we want to maintain the integrity of our brands, and we want to support everyone--large and small--who carries our pipes. This will level the playing field and offer each retailer an opportunity to market our Neptune and Icarus pipes to their respective customers without having to worry about online discounting.
Because all of our pipes are individually finished--by individuals--each one is going to be slightly different, so our interactive shape catalogs will only serve to give you an idea of the pipes that are possible. We believe that pipes are as unique as the collectors who smoke them, so we don't want to sell pipes based on a "model." We want for our retailers to photograph or display individual pipes for the collector to choose, personally. In other words, the pipe you see is the pipe that you receive in the mail, or the pipe you take home!
All this to say, we realize everyone is chomping at the bit to get at these pipes, and I assure you all, we're working tirelessly to make that possible within the month. Chicago was sort of our "soft opening," and we expect to have 1000-1500 pieces at IPCPR in August. Shortly thereafter, the pipes will be available from the four corners of the earth. In the interim, you can follow us on Twitter/Instagram/Facebook and probably some other newfangled social media outlets I don't know about to get updates and teasers on current happenings.
If anyone has any questions, you're also welcome to e-mail us at info@briarworksintl.com and someone--probably Rita--will get back to you within the same day.
All the best,
Todd

Hello Todd, nice to see you on the forum (and on the radio, I just listened to the interview yesterday).
Now for a tough question, how do you enforce the MAP?

I've seen many companies try to use this strategy before, and there's always coupons, free shipping and other free stuff that gets thrown in.

Is your relationship with retailers good enough to actually prevent undercutting?
(Hmm, now I see he hasn't been on since he posted, nevertheless, it's an interesting question.)
