We hope and expect that the 2013 Chicago Pipe Show will be a great time for all. At 305 exhibitor tables and spaces it will be bigger than ever! All of the 2013 Show’s tables have been sold out for weeks, so we hope all of you can visit us this year at the Show on May 4 and 5, 2013. The Show starts on Wednesday the first of May with a number of activities.
Over the next several days I will be posting here about some, but not all, events at the 2013 Show:
This year a big cigar event will join our Show. The Big Burn Chicago. They are an independent event, but they are helping us to be the biggest and best show ever.
The Big Burn Chicago will feature premium cigars from many top cigar manufacturers, as well as food and adult beverages. There is a charge for this event by Big Burn Chicago. Midwest's largest premium cigar, craft beer, spirit and wine event! Complimentary 30 premium cigars with purchase of an event ticket. Enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres, exclusive drink samples from premium spirits, craft beers and wines, along with live music and the Big Burn Booth Girls. Luxury raffle prizes throughout the night. For information and ticket purchase please visit their website at http://www.bigburnchicago.com!
So, please come to the Show on May First, 2013 and enjoy the Big Burn Chicago.
You can stay at Pheasant Run Resort for the Big Burn Chicago on the special Show rates, and stay for the Chicago Pipe Show through the weekend on May 4th and 5th.

I enjoyed the thread from last year, as you leaked out news about the various events during the show. It will be fun to watch this thread again.

The Friday morning event formerly known as the “Pre-Show” will continue as the “Smoke and Swap” again this year. Last year’s Smoke and Swap was a very popular event. It is an informal swap meet, in a place where it easy to hang out. This is an opportunity to eat, drink and smoke where pipes and tobacco are being sold and traded all day long.
The Smoke and Swap will be in the 6000 square foot smoking tent on May 3rd, 2013.
80 - ½ table places will be available on a first come/first served basis starting at 8 am (or as soon as the tables are set up by hotel staff) for those wanting to sell. Exhibitors have started lining up before 7 AM in the past. There will be no reservations, no numbers, and no charge. Just come in, choose an available chair, and set up your ½ table space. Use it until 4pm, or leave when you like. Once you leave, the ½ table space is available for another seller to take your place.
The Swap and Smoke will be open to the buyers from 9 am to 4pm. There is no charge.
Smoking is encouraged.
Pheasant Run Resort will have coffee early, and food and drink will be available in the tent during regular business hours at reasonable prices.

Today’s update post is about Pipe Displays. An important part of every pipe show is the display of pipe collections. Each year, the Chicago Show invites several pipe collectors to exhibit their collections in locked glass display cases that are in front of the Mega Center hall.
This year the following individuals have graciously agreed to display a portion of their pipe collections in the CPCC Educational Glass Display Cases in the Mega Center, as follows:
DAVE PETERSON will display pipes from his collection of Castello pipes.
MARK BERMAN will display Perry White pipes and other American pipes from his collection.
GEORGE AMRON will display pipes from his collection of bamboo stem pipes.
CPCC club members Paul Bender, Lee Murphy, Judd F. Perlson, Michael W. Reschke, and Pat Velkavrh will display a selection of pipes from their collections.

The Chicago Pipe Show thanks these men for all the time, work, and effort to bring these wonderful pipes to the Show so that all of us can see these great collections. Please be sure to make time during your visit to the Chicago Pipe Show to see these four beautiful collections.
Also, don't forget to make your hotel reservations as soon as possible at Pheasant Run Resort. Be sure to mention the Pipe Show when you make your reservations so that the Show gets credit for you, and you get the show special rates of $155.00 for tower rooms and $109 for courtyard rooms.

Today’s post is about one of our great speakers this year. MEIKE HUIJSSEN, CEO of the Schonberger Ebonite Manufaktur GmbH, located in Hitzacker, Germany.

www.sem-ebonite.com
For many years the Show has presented a series of discussions entitled “The Pipe Makers Forum.” This year Ms. Huijssen will speak about the use of ebonite for pipe stems. Her presentation will discuss the composition and characteristics of ebonite. I saw a part of her presentation last year at the Show, and it will be fascinating to all pipe makers and pipe smokers.
Lee Erck and Rex Poggenpohl will be the co-moderators this year, and will assist in the question and discussion phase of the Forum
The presentation and discussions will take place in the Marsalis Room in the Pheasant Run Resort at 8:45 pm on Friday night May 3, 2013.
After many years of discussing the briar, its time to talk about the other end of the pipe, and to learn all that you ever needed to know about ebonite. Don’t miss this presentation.

Frank Burla, the legend, the founder of the Chicago Pipe Show, the Show Director Emeritus of the Chicago Pipe Show, and the great collector and master of antique pipes and tobacciana, will present a Display and Discussion of Several Rare Antique Tobacciana Accessories. The presentation will be in the Mega Center on Friday night at 9 PM. Frank will bring a number unique smoking accessories from his collection to introduce us to the accessories that our smoking ancestors used in the history of smoking. Frank is a great speaker, and this is an event that antique collectors and pipe smokers interested in the history of pipe smoking will want to attend.

Its time to talk about golf at the 2013 Chicago Pipe Show. The Show is held at a great resort, which offers many activities. A spa, a swimming pool, a workout room, great restaurants, and a beautiful golf course are all there.
The Pheasant Run Golf Course is offering special rates to those who are attending the Show. A round of golf, with cart included, is only $39.00 on weekdays except Wednesday, May 1, 2013, the date of the Big Burn Chicago golf outing. There is also a 15% discount on most in stock, regularly priced merchandise in the Pheasant Run Resort Golf Shop.
In order to get this special, you must tell the golf shop that you are with the Show and want the special rates, or present the golf flyer. Golf flyers will be at the Show.
Due to a number of circumstances, the Show does have its own golf outing that we had for a number of years. However, this year there is the big golf outing on Wednesday the First of May held by the Big Burn Chicago. This should be great cigar event, so please visit the Big Burn Chicago website for all the details about the cigar event and their golf outing: www.bigburnchicago.com

Prior to 2008, all of our seminars were smoke friendly, and were very well attended. Since the Illinois smoking ban on indoor smoking went into effect, we have had a drop off in attendance at seminars in the Tower meeting rooms at Pheasant Run. We know that is because many of our Show participants want to smoke in the evenings, and they stay in the tent.
So, this year we are having even more Show events into the 6000 square foot smoking tent. This year’s presentations will begin on Friday night, May 3, 2013.
Mr. Kevin Godbee, Publisher and Editor in Chief of PipesMagazine.com, and Brian Levine, the host of the Pipes Magazine Radio Show.
Kevin has a unique background and is very well qualified to speak about pipes and cigars on the internet. He launched PipesMagazine.com in 2009, which has become the largest trafficked pipe smoking related site, and the #1 Source for Pipes and Pipe Tobacco Information. Over the last 11 years working in the online business, he has become an expert in Internet Marketing and SEO. Kevin is a Certified Master Tobacconist (CMT) through Tobacconist University, a member of Cigar Rights of America, and is a Media Member of the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association.
Brian is the United States representative of Brigham Pipes, and has a spectacular background in the pipe business, including Peter Stokkebye International, Ltd., and SmokingPipes.com. Brian brings his unique knowledge of the pipe and tobacco industry to the Pipes Magazine Radio Show each week. And now he will bring that expertise to all of us at the Chicago Show.
The Pipes Magazine Radio Show is the only online radio talk and entertainment show in the world that is targeted to pipe smokers and collectors. This very popular show is a weekly feature on Pipesmagazine.com.
Kevin and Brian will discuss the Radio Show and give all of us an inside look at everything you ever wanted to know about.
Since you are reading this on one of the pipe internet sites, you will want to hear this presentation by Kevin and Brian on Friday night, in the smoking tent at 9 PM.

One of these days, I'll get my act together moneywise and attend a show. I think it'd be great fun. I just wouldn't want to show up pockets empty, what with all those pipes for sale. How about trades? Is there much trade going on - pipe trading I mean? Having a grand collection, I'd love to go to a show and walk away with a handful of new trades.

THE EVENTS IN THE TENT: On Saturday night, May 4th, 5 PM in the Smoking Tent, immediately following the close of the Show for the day at 5 PM, we will have two wonderful presentations.
FRED HANNA, the renowned author and tobacco expert, will speak on The Nicotine in Your Pipe: Drug of the Devil or Gift of the Gods. All pipe smokers are interested in the importance of Nicotine in our favorite tobacco blends, and Fred will present his views and expertise on this important topic.
Fred is the author of the of the highly acclaimed book “The Perfect Smoke, gourmet pipe smoking for relaxation and reflection”. Fred has been described as a “pipes and tobacco gastronome” by Neill Archer Roan on A Passion for Pipes: http://www.apassionforpipes.com/neills-blog/2012/7/12/fred-hannas-the-perfect-smoke.html
Fred is also the creator of two of my favorite blends: Legends and Wilderness.
Be sure to go directly to the Tent after the Show closes for the day at 5 PM to hear Fred Hanna make what will be a historic presentation about the role of Nicotine in our pipes.
At 6 PM, in the smoking tent, Mr. Rob Cooper will present "The CHANGING State of the Estate Pipe Market 2013".
Mr. Cooper is the renowned “ Coopersark”, seller of high grade pipes on eBay.
Rob will offer his expertise on the Estate Pipe Market, as he has done annually for the last several years. Rob is famous for his straightforward approach to the age old question: “My pipe collection is worth, What?” Mr. Cooper will make his presentation about the 2013 changing trends for estate pipe purchases and sales, and then accept questions and discussions from the audience.
If you are interested in buying and/or selling pipes, and everyone at the Show is interested in this topic, you will want to attend. This is one seminar that you need to prepare to attend: Think of your questions in advance, and be ready to present them to Rob and the audience at large at 6 PM Saturday in the smoking tent. Be ready to present your point of view on the estate market.
This will be a popular and spirited discussion on the value of your collection. Be there.

Today, let’s talk about pipe smoking! Slow smoking to be exact.
The United Pipe Clubs of America will host the Eleventh Annual U.S. National Championship in slow smoking at 1 pm, Sunday, May 5th, 2013 in the smoking tent.

The UPCA has tables at the Show for registration.
The beautiful contest pipe this year is provided by Neat Pipes, one of the great exhibitors at the 2013 Chicago Pipe Show; The contest tobacco is blended by Russ Ouellette of www.pipesandcigars.com, which is another exhibitor at the Show, and the winner of the 2011 Tobacco Throwdown with his creation of the very popular Black House blend, which I just happen to be smoking as I post this.
The UPCA hopes to send the winner to the 2013 Slow Smoke World Cup, which will be held in Poznan, Poland, later this year. There seem to be more contestants each year as slow smoking contests catch on across the country and more smokers experience how much fun such competitions can be. UPCA will have places for about 100 contestants this year. Registration in advance online, or at the Show.

The United Pipe Clubs of America website for information and registration is:
