THE SUPEREVENT. Saturday night, May 5th, 5 PM in the Smoking Tent.
5pm will see the second Throwdown. This was such a great event last year, the entire pipe world is looking to do it again! This year, the 2012 John Cotton’s Nos. 1&2 Medium Throwdown Tobacco Blending Contest certainly looks to be another great presentation of the Seattle and New York clubs. Matt and Jon Guss began working on this just after last year’s blockbuster event. These two, and other members of the Seattle and New York Clubs have worked hard to bring another classic blend of the past to today’s pipe smokers. We are all enjoying last year’s Black House (Winner of the judged competition) and Blue Mountain (People’s choice winner), and I, for one, hope to be enjoying this year’s contest blends. Last year’s 3rd contestant, the Sutliff Tobacco Company is sponsoring this year’s Throwdown.
The SEATTLE PIPE CLUB and the NEW YORK PIPE CLUB have challenged Steven Books of the House of Calabash, Dick Silverman of Chief Catoonah and Leonard Wortzel of Lane Limited, to recreate the legendary John Cotton’s Nos. 1&2 Medium in a blending Throwdown. At 5 PM Saturday, Celebrity Judges Russ Ouellette, Marty Pulvers, Neill Archer Roan will review the contestant’s blends, compare them to the John Cotton blend, name the winner, and award the all-time bragging rights. In addition, there will be a People’s Choice Award. If you are interested in voting for the People’s Choice Award, you can pick up free samples of the contestant’s blends at the Friday Swap and Smoke or at the Show on Saturday until 2 PM (or until supply runs out). All People’s Choice ballots must be turned in by 4:30 PM on Saturday. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will also be announced at 5 PM Saturday.
AFTER THE DETERMINATION OF THE THROWDOWN WINNER, STAY RIGHT IN YOUR SEAT FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE SUPEREVENT!
BRANDS AND ROSES!
Pipe Brands: What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
Rick Newcombe and Rich Esserman will discuss this hot topic with you, the audience at the Superevent.
Why do you buy the pipes you buy? Is a "good smoker" a given? How important is the briar? Is there a connection between Stradivarius violins and Ivarsson pipes? These are just some of the topics that will be addressed during a lively discussion led by Rich and Rick. All pipe smokers have their opinions, and we want to hear as many as possible during this friendly audience-participation event that will stimulate your thinking about your pipe collecting.
Mr. Newcombe will conclude the discussion with a drawing for a “Brand” Dunhill Pipe from the late Jim Benjamin's private collection. All attendees are eligible to win. Winner must be present.
Now, how super is that? First we have the re-creation of a great tobacco blend, and then we have the opportunity to debate the role of brand name pipes in our collecting choices. And, it all ends with someone winning a Dunhill pipe.
Be sure to grab your seat right after the Chicago Pipe Show closes for the day on Saturday, and stay in your seat to have your chance to win a Dunhill.
