I've never felt grain meant more than anything other than visual effect. Honestly I like Birds Eye or flame grain more than straight grain. Just my preference, that's all. Here's two examples of grain I like: the first is a Don Carlos with a nice flame grain and then there's an old Comoy's second with a Birds Eye grain.

That lovat is something... 👀

I have an unmarked Danish i picked up years ago that was quite inexpensive, but smokes straight VA like a dream. It's survived the few culling events that brought fresh change to the stable every so often. Still love the grain, the size, the hand-feel, etc.

And a Karl Erik that i somehow had at one time bought 2 of, later realizing this, i kept the one i liked best and let the other go.

Talk about chasing grain, this whole cubistic shape is all about chasing grain.

Grain all along the sides, and the top, bottom, and facets are all birdseye.

The grain that I like best is birdseye Seem harder to find than straight grain. Several in my collection have colored like a meer. Photo is what I refer to as quilted birdseye with cross grain on front of bowl.
