I've often found that a 10 minute DGT improves the smoke (mainly VaPers, for me).

But it may be that the delay just whets my appetite, so the T in DGT may stand for tantalize. :puffy:

if i fill the bowl to top, second light seems to be needed more often. if i'm smoking a half bowl, usually charring light is only light i need. lately, i've been drying the tobacco till crisp.

Just did this (left it resting overnight) and the flavor improved in my perception.
By the way, my pipe isn't broken in.
I think this is not a myth.

OK, just started doing this all the time and it really does improve the taste of tobacco.
I'm always waiting some 15-20 minutes at least now, before the "hard light".

Well this opened my eyes to something new all I've been doing is a charring light and then smoking. I'm going to try some experimenting.

Most of the time the "charring light" phrase doesn't get used here. Light it up and smoke away. Put it down after a half hour and come back in an hour, day, several days, ten minutes. Unless your tobacco is soggy in the heel it's all good.

I’ve never really noticed that a charring light improves flavor. I do it when and if I think I’m not getting an even light across the bowl, and I don’t wait more than 10 or 15 seconds after I tamp it down for a true light. Maybe I’m missing out, but I doubt it
