Charatan Tulip
I'm interested in this Charatan. It would be my first from the marque. I've tried to do some dating on my own with the information that's on pipedia, but I'm hitting a dead end without being able to actually hold the pipe..

The stem is missing the CP logo..cant tell if it's been buffed away.
Any Charatan experts able to offer some insight based on the mediocre nomenclature pictures?

Ask Mike G for detailed nomenclature pix, he's quite prompt in replies & inquires. Based on what can't be seen, I'm guessing 4th or 5th era?

Yes, give Mike a call or send him an email.
It is certainly a Charatan's stem...the Reg. mark can be seen when the picture is blown up.

I emailed Mike about any further info but he told me "The nomenclature is as shown in the description. Not much more I can tell you."
As long as it's pre-80s I think I'd be fine with it.
Al, you said the Distinction is a nice step up the ladder. Anyone know of an ascending list of the Charatan lines?

Broadly speaking, I think that it could well be a 1970s Distinction. I am hazarding a guess when I say that it has had a new tenon fitted or at least the mouthpiece has been frased (re-sanded) flush to the shank at some point because I can see the briar stain around the fit has been sanded and the repairer did not try to colour match the existing stain. If that is the case, I don't see how the regd no. is still so visible on the mouthpiece. The small Charatan stamping on the shank indicates early 1970 I think.

I am sure that Detective georged would be able to give you his thoughts on it. Nice grain and nice shape.

I see that lightened stain in that area on many restored pipes. The water used to sand off the oxidation can remove stain if you aren't careful. I either use a thin plastic shield or wipe the shank frequently with a dry towel.

I see even the experts have questions. :puffy:
Like I said..its awfully difficult to come to certain conclusions without having it in-hand.

I've never owned a Charatan so I have nothing to compare it to.
