I got a private tour of the Cohiba factory in 2000. It is never open to the public and I learned why. They couldn't give a shit about how many plugged cigars they rolled. They thought it was some kind of joke. I almost got in the face of the manager but stopped myself figuring I would end up in some communist's prison.I gave up on Cubans in ‘92 when the prices went through the roof.
Like @cigrmaster alluded to, I never got pipes and cigars to play together well.
As to your off taste problem, that’s a crapshoot, but inconsistency in Cubans used to be the norm. I’ve no idea how it’s been the last couple decades.
The Partagas factory was only slightly better as they had tourists going in and out and they didn't want to look to bad.
When I toured the Fuente factories it was like night and day, Fuente was a freak about quality control and it shows up in all the cigars they make.
