I gave up on Cubans in ‘92 when the prices went through the roof.
Like @cigrmaster alluded to, I never got pipes and cigars to play together well.
As to your off taste problem, that’s a crapshoot, but inconsistency in Cubans used to be the norm. I’ve no idea how it’s been the last couple decades.
I got a private tour of the Cohiba factory in 2000. It is never open to the public and I learned why. They couldn't give a shit about how many plugged cigars they rolled. They thought it was some kind of joke. I almost got in the face of the manager but stopped myself figuring I would end up in some communist's prison.

The Partagas factory was only slightly better as they had tourists going in and out and they didn't want to look to bad.

When I toured the Fuente factories it was like night and day, Fuente was a freak about quality control and it shows up in all the cigars they make.

Didn't happen till i took up the pipe more though and there are still a couple sticks i enjoy ... 80% of. I'm just going to give smoking a break for a couple days and first try a cigar to see if it's still has that tannic taste.
Sounds like latakia burnout that some smokers experience. When they get subtle flavors of milder blends, latakia becomes bitter and dominates their old favorite blends.

Man I’ve had this happen to me numerous times. I did like you and kept trying sticks that I knew were some of the best in my humidor, with no avail. I smoke Cuban cigars, Nicaraguan cigars, and pipes. Usually a day or two would allow that great Cuban cigar to taste better again. Or a strong Nicaraguan cigar will always taste good, it’s just the Cubans have a more subtle taste as opposed to my favorite Nicaraguans. I keep my cabinet humidor between 62% and 65%. It is very frustrating to have cigars that you know are sublime taste bitter and acrid! It’s not the sticks it’s you. So from my experience, stop wasting them until your taste regulates back to normal.

I got back to smoking pipes 4 years ago, having smoked cigars exclusively for the previous 15 years.
I was smoking Cubans (Partagas, Cohibas, Hoyos), Padron Anniversary, Davidoff and Fuente Opus X mainly.

I still smoke a cigar occasionally, but find I am not enjoying them as much. :(
Cost is not a factor as I have sufficient stock cellared for several years.

Too right !
I've lost count of the number of Habanos (Cohibas, Partagas, etc) I've tossed because they were plugged.

No such problem with Padrons or Fuentes

The Cubans may know how to grow great leaf, but when it comes to quality control, they really suck.

If you are 100% certain your tabac is fine, and you don’t have any health issues going on, here is a very likely situation.

In regards to the tongue, when people crave a particular diet as an example, the tongue has a lot to do with what drives a person to eat what they do, because of taste, and what the tongue has become accustomed to.

Take junky foods as an example, salt, oils, fats, etc, and you try to switch over to fruits and veggies, and the experience/taste is bad, because the tongue is accustomed to the salts, oils, fats, etc.

SO, my point being, any smoking changes you’ve made, like going back and forth between pipe blends and cigars, is quite possibly your tongue is becoming accustomed to pipe tabac blend tastes, and now, cigars are simply tasting off to your tongue.

Of course we all experience the same health conditions to one extent or another.

It’s just for you to determine if it’s a problem with your tabac, or the changes in your life, throwing things off. :)

Oh, I’m sure you know it, just didn’t see any mentions here. I’d highly recommended slowly the smoking down, and not smoking a lot of variety too, to give your body a chance to adjust, even if, as an example, you’ve followed this routine for years with no issues. You just have to remember, at some point, the body might just reject.

Be well! ❤️

A tip: I used to "unplug" a cigar by slowly pushing a sharpened piece of coat hanger trough it from back to front. Leave it in the cigar for a day and when you slowly remove it the cigar will no longer be plugged. puffy

Had something similar happen to me about 10 - 15 years ago. Smoked cigars as well as pipes and I think my love affair with pipes and pipe tobacco ruined my cigar smoking. Just my experience and definitely YMMV...

So I can slightly relate to this. I smoked cigars before I got into pipe smoking. I still love cigars to this day and smoke them regularly. All that being said, when I started smoking fine pipe tobacco it definitely changed my taste with cigars. What was one time a mouth watering experience smoking a fine cigar is now just enjoyable. But when I get to smoke a fantastic pipe tobacco it makes my mouth water. Hope my experience sheds a little light on what you are experiencing.
