I basically never smoke more than one bowl a day. But when I see some on this site a smoking multiple bowls a day, I can't help wondering if you change pipes or just let the first pipe of the day cool a bit between smokes? I would like to know so I can be guided by the collective wisdom.

I do both as the mood strikes. Sometimes I smoke back to back bowls in the same pipe after it has had time to cool off. Other times I grab a different pipe, either for another bowl of the same blend or something different. I pretty much always grab a different pipe when changing blends.

Whatever suits your mood.

There are some who smoke several bowls in the same pipe
Or indeed smoke the same pipe for several days

As tobacco burns, it produces steam and water vapour which leads to gurgling and a moist/wet dottle at the bottom of the bowl, which can cause a pipe to “sour”.

Meerschaum and corn cobs are more absorbent than briar and can be smoked end-to-end.

I use meer chips or Nording Keystones in the bottom of my bowls which reduces gurgling and dottle substantially.
But my preference is to rest my pipes after each smoke

I smoke about 7-8 bowls a day and I hardly ever change pipes. I may do it once in a while for a different feel or draw, but not often. I’m definitely a codger in that pipe smoking to me is a habit, not a hobby. It’s a relaxing pass time for me and I refuse to let logic or common sense enter into things.

It just slows things down when you think.

My afternoon relax time smoke is always in my meer.

But if I have other smokes, they're shorter, and lately I've taken to having 3-4 bowls a day. For those other 2-3, I'm always grabbing the same pipe (my Ropp J16 beater).

It's fine as long as I let it sit for about an hour, though even that's probably not necessary. Seems it takes maybe 10 minutes at best to cool down, and is relatively dry from the minute I finish, even if I smoked a wetter tobacco in it.

I generally let my pipes rest for a day if I can but last weekend I smoked the same pipe in the same evening and it smoked absolutely fine even though I had smoked it not but a few hours ago. It had time to cool down and even though I didn't clean it between it tasted fine. Probably helped that it was the same blend I had smoked earlier so your mileage may vary.

I carry two pipes and five or six blends in my lunchbox all week, smoking 3-5 smokes a shift. The pipe I keep in my car gets smoked on way to work and on way home, getting a good cleaning about every other weekend.
The half dozen or so of my usual rotation of briars take this kind of use (what some here would probably say is abuse) better than my cobs.

I smoke 4 times daily with about 3-4 bowls each time. I use a different pipe for each smoking session and use no pipe more than once weekly. So, a 28 pipe rotation on a weekly basis.

At about 10-12 bowls a day I mostly smoke a different pipe each time. Sometimes i smoke the same meer 2-3 times in a row (especially if it's new or i'm travelling with limited pipes). Otherwise, it's rare that i smoke a briar more than once in a days' time. Typically prefer to let the woods rest. However, if i'm hankering for a certain briar experience twice in a day -- which happens on rare occasion -- then i won't hesitate. Only rule: Enjoy your pipes the way they give you the most pleasure.

I don't enjoy a bowl as often as most and have quite a few pipes --- never the same pipe for me if I enjoy more than one bowl, and usually a different tobacco.

I tend to pair blend types with pipes and seldom smoke the same blend twice in a row (unless I'm out and about and it's what I have with me). So yes and no. And sometimes.

You can't tell this rabble that! No telling what chaos will ensue.

They need strict rules...with real consequences for nonconformists!

As a MOD you're expected to produce order and discipline...you're a disgrace to the uniform!
I'm supposed to get a uniform?

Ok, OK, Ok, I get it... you like it rough.

I’m a lazy pipe smoker. I smoke burley in a cob to start every morning because I like it. I usually smoke one briar pipe for any afternoon bowls, no matter how many, because I don’t like to clean pipes.
