I found something rather interesting today. I just received a new castello 15 with a tapered stem. I was looking at an old sea rock that i had with a saddle stem. Both pipes are a #15. The stems actually fit one another pipe wise. There were no gaps. You wouldnt know which stem was originally made if you hadnt seen the original pairing.

Is this a one off fluke?

im tempted to leave the saddle stem, but for some reason it feels like i would mess up the mortise

Can't imagine using the stems interchangeably would cause harm to either mortise. Gives you a nice bit of variety too.
