Well, I finally did it: I grew my cellar large enough that I can justify creating a spreadsheet to keep track of it. So that's exactly what I did! I was inspired by a relatively old post here on the forums (2014) and liked the look of that member's spreadsheet, so I did my best to emulate it. It took about three hours to plug in all my blends and pull info from tobaccoreviews.com, and I'm really happy with the result. Now to organize the actual jars on the shelf! (Maybe...)

I'm a fan of spreadsheets. Mine is pretty similar to that one but instead of columns for type, components, casing, and cut I have Purchase Date, Manufacture Date, Cost, # of tins, Weight (these last two are needed to sum the total ounces I have), and then the bin number I'm storing the tin in so I can find it later.

I just did this a few months ago. My cellar is literal, so I got tired of having to do a flight of stairs up and down whenever I wondered what I had. Laugh if you want, but at my age, the knees ain't what they used to be.

I also made one for "what I have open" and another for "every dang tobacco I've ever smoked and whether or not I liked it" Again, laugh if you want, but it'll happen to you someday.

So far, no regrets. Saved me a few trips up and down the stairs and also from placing orders for things I tried before and hated and forgot I hated.

I considered doing those columns as well, but a lot of my blends are so old that I don't remember when I bought them (much less when they were manufactured or what they cost). Oh well. I really like the idea of separate weight and tin columns - I might add those. And it will probably be several years before I'm able to add a "bin" column! Haha.

Oh man, that sounds like a pain! I can see why you were motivated to make a spreadsheet. Hopefully it will add some longevity to the ol' knees.

I basically never turn the computer on except to do work that I can't do from my phone, and spreadsheets suck on a phone, super pita, so I made an app for my phone.

Useful in other ways too, now if I feel like having something new, I don't have to dig out the whole cabinet to see what I have... just have to dig out the whole cabinet to find what I decided what I want... though I did try to keep it somewhat organized to make it easier, like keeping certain brands, styles and/or series all together.

No laughing here as I have a similar approach. One tab in the spreadsheet is cellar (one row per container). Another is previous tastings and notes. In the cellar tab, I made the text red for blends I haven't tried.

It's great that you have a spreadsheet to keep up with all that Capt Black. puffy

It is easier to start out with a plan than to try to convert to a spreadsheet after you've let your cellar get out of control. I used an iPhone app to keep my cellar recorded in, until the owner of the app just let it die off. At that point, I was not about to try to re-inventory my huge mess.

Here's a glimpse of my Google sheet. It's broken out by genre, and sorted by tin date (to the best of my ability to date them.) Totals and other metrics are out of view to protect the guilty. 😇

Tasting notes and miscellaneous other things are in other tabs...

Well done! I also keep a spreadsheet and decided to break out components (at least to the degree the information is available to me). I log my smokes (simply -- just date, blend, pipe, and any specific notes) that rolls up to a summary as well.

I like that components section with each tobacco type having a separate column. I might adopt that to my spreadsheet.

Great thread! There are some inspirations here. I started by spreadsheet when the cellar was about half the current size, and it took me a few weeks to list it all after building out the sheet (a few tins a night, don't think that my cellar is that extensive). Now, it's easy, new acquisitions are added as they arrive. I have 3 sheets there: 1) Summary of all tobaccos, 2) Cellar - the actual database, and, 3) Pipes will all the measures, etc. Here are a few screenshots, hopefully this might serve as an inspiration for someone.
