In a nutshell: To boost the prize money shared equally by the seven winners of the Kansas City Pipe Club's annual carving contest---which, btw, has significance in the pipe-making world (it is a deadly serious competition, not a feelgood promotional event)---a number of U. S. carvers leading up to the contest have made and donated a pipe to the cause. They are converted to cash by the KC club via raffle, and the money put into the contest's prize fund.
