Tried Carter Hall for the first time today. Been cellared for about 9 months in a mason jar since I bought it.

Not bad. It’s an easy smoke. It stays lit incredibly well and produces quite a bit of smoke. Also has that old timey pipe smell. I did get an odd waft of chocolate, and occasionally a chemically tinge. Not sure what that taste is.

I’ll definitely finish the tub, but I honestly prefer Smoker’s Pride Black Cavendish for a cheap OTC blend. Probably due to my love of aromatics.

Possibly the propylene glycol (PG). Some can taste it more than others.
It's my "base" blend, as in, the "lowest" I'll go. I like it overall and it got me on the path that led to smokeable leaf. But sometimes I taste it's chemical.

Chiming in to say that I'm infatuated with Carter Hall. I have brushed up against this several times in my life in ways that have very nostalgic associations. Our bus driver, Mack, smoked CH - in that storied epoch when bus drivers could smoke a pipe while driving kids to school. He was a character and we all loved him, and on "teacher's day" all the kids would get him a pouch of CH, in that time when kids could buy pipe tobacco at the store. He must have had pounds of it. Also my piano teacher smoked it constantly - he was another character. A real genius, he had books on his shelves that were signed by J.S. Bach as well as his son CPE Bach. And he smoked CH while barking at me not to look at my hands. And there were others.

So I bought a tin and I really love this stuff. Nutty, sweet, easy to pack and light. The subtle topping is actually a welcome addition. I keep getting new aromas on the retrohale. Great with coffee, great with a beer. And it's cheap. And you get a cool tub that is useful for a million things. "A useful pot", as Pooh would say.

So I'm happy I can enjoy an all day smoke that I don't have to light with a butane blow torch and can load with one hand.

Now that I'm an official codger, do I get a hat or something? Is there a secret handshake?
