Probably the best of the OTCs, though I like them all in different ways. I still have an unopened tub dated 2013. If it's anything like a five-year-old tub I had, it will be pure pipesmokerly ecstasy. I know burley isn't known for aging, but something sure as hell happened in that can. Best Smoke Ever.
Ive often wondered if burley doesnt age whats up with Solani Aged Burley Flake?

Carter Hall used to be available in every grocery store and drug store in the U.S., like Tide detergent and Cheerios cereal. I wouldn't know where to buy it now in my fair sized city. The Smoker's Shop that used to sell it and one or two other blends, closed years ago, and my local independent pipe shop mostly sells premium blends.
Remember walking into Walgreens and seeing the huge tobacco displays? At Christmas time the Christmas tins were everywhere.

Ohhhhh my Carter hall. My one true love. I keep 6 tubs on hand at all times. Today on my lunch break I stopped for cigs, and had the owner to order me some Carter hall. I'll know by Tuesday. Then I have some other blends to see if they can get too. Maybe I should ask to see the catalog lol.

But I've successfully had 4 different had stations order and stock Carter hall for me. Gotta have it near by!

I’ve been buying pouches of codger blends to learn more about smoking pipes. Could only find a tub of CH. I heard there aren’t anymore pouches, just the tub. I don’t regret my purchase!

In Humansville fifty years ago, all the domestic pipe blends cost a quarter and what a tub was I don’t know, because I never bought a tub until pipe tobacco cost 35 cents and a tub of Half and Half then was $3.50, and only 14 ounces.

I felt cheated it wasn’t a pound.:)

My second step father’s sister and brother in law made a good living (after bar codes) employed by a grocery wholesaler helping grocery stores allot shelf space. Every article in a modern supermarket is assigned a certain shelf space in a specific location, and if it doesn’t move fast enough it’s dropped, and faster selling inventory takes its place. It was fascinating to discuss it with them, and the science has to be even more refined today.

Based on shelf space and location (eye level start of row best) the 600 pound gorilla in the Ozarks of the seventies was a can, and box of PA, then a can, and box of Velvet, followed by boxes of Half and Half, SWR, and Carter Hall. The others came in tail end Charlie.

But if you squatted down to look at the tubs, usually Carter Hall was the winner.

At the Smoker’s Friendly where I bought my $28 tub of Carter Hall, it was the only 14 ounce size tub in the store, eye level, they had a double row, right beside the huge display of bags of cheap “RYO” grade tobaccos. They were sold out the last time I visited in November before this week.

This week I’m going back and buy another tub for the office.

John Middleton is owned by Altria (formerly Phillip Morris) and they hold the keys to the secret sauce that made PA and Carter Hall famous, plus whatever made Marlboro the number one brand on the shelves fifty years ago and still today, at every gas station.

They know how, to make bad things that make you smile.E17F2482-087C-4188-AFAA-2E97F10BD2D4.jpeg

I miss the pouches. Totally different taste and cut of tobacco compared to the tub. For anyone who doesn't believe me, I have pictures as proof! 😂

The Carter Hall sauce is the same, to me.

But no way the pouches held this high grade of leaf.

The Dominican Republic is the largest exporter of cigars on the planet.

They can surely handle making Carter Hall.:)
As a decade long smoker and the forums biggest Carter hall fan, I didn't care for the Dom Rep version. But 4 of my 8 tubs are from there, so I hope I get used to it!

It’s Dominican leaf, most likely. But Altria is not likely to use inferior leaf to make what may be their largest seller in 14 ounce tubs.

I’ve knocked a big divot out of my tub in a few days.

Carter Hall might uplift the reputation of American codger burleys, even at this late hour.:)
