Those who say that they know of such things have said the following..The peanut crops in the south have been dissapointing the last couple of years. In order to correct the peanut situation. This year more land here in Carolina is expected to be planted in peanuts and less in tobacco.I don't know if this will have an effect on tobacco prices.I hope not.

Have you seen anything in the media yet? I'd imagine not (too many stories about the presidential race and orphaned cats) but if anyone is a link this is something I think we'd all be very interested in hearing more about. I'll admit, ever since I found out about what PACT did to snuff I'm slightly terrified that pipe tobacco is always a law away from being more difficult to acquire.

Good point, roguefox. With the FDA's intrusion into flavored tobaccos the storm clouds are forming. I hate the thought of someone saving me from myself.

I work at a cooperative grocery store and let me tell ya, peanut prices are on the rise!

Kind of ironic eh? Rising cotton prices are forcing out peanuts, so now peanuts are forcing out tobacco. Well, that and drought. I only expect prices to continue to rise, that is why I have seeds shipping to my house right now. Time to perfect an agreeable home blend to supplement my tin purchasing.

I kinda doubt planting less tobacco in North Carolina will affect pipe smokers that use quality tobaccos very much, think of where the contents of our different blends come from. It will most likely affect cigarette and cheep drug store cigar smokers much more than us. (I hope I haven't stepped on any TarHeal toes, but I believe it's true).

North Carolina has a "Tobacco Buy-out Tax". It is on all orders from C&D direct. I believe it is used to pay tobacco farmers not to plant tobacco. From what I have heard the trend has been for years to grow less tobacco in the South. What a shame!
Here is a quote:

"A Summary of the Tobacco Buyout

Work on legislation to end the federal tobacco program and compensate quota owners and growers has been an ongoing process for a number of years and finally came to fruition in the fall of 2004. In June, 2004 the U.S. House of Representatives passed corporate tax legislation (H.R. 4520) that included $9.6 billion in compensation to quota owners and growers and an end to the tobacco program. Then in July the U.S. Senate passed their version of the corporate tax legislation. The Senate version also ended the current tobacco program and included $11 billion in compensation. It also included legislation that would allow FDA to regulate tobacco products."
