I recently happened upon an old, very beautiful Carey Magic Inch Pipe. I have been in the process of restoring it but I have run into a snag. The "magic inch" Mechanism that is glued to the mortise is so skinny that I cannot run a pipe cleaner through it, and I think there may be an obstruction somewhere in there. Does anyone know of a way that I can free up the airway of this pipe?

Try one of the Falcon extra thin pipe cleaners dipped in some pipe cleaner.

The Falcon extra thins are only available from the U.K. as far as I know.

Most of the magic inch dohickies are removable. Try some high proof alcohol dripped carefully around the joint.

Unclearthur, I never thought of that. My only concern would be getting it glued back on once I have it off. What kind of glue should I use?

Every one I have seen is just a press fit. I take them out and throw them away . I find that the famous "Magic Inch" delivers a very poor smoke. I replace the stems with good quality Vulcanite.

I know of a gentleman who offered to do this for me free of charge, but that would mean me sending it off. I was just trying to see if there was something that I could do on my end to make the pipe smokable. Perhaps I will take your suggestion and wait a little longer to smoke it. I would rather get a proper smoke out of it and wait then get a poor smoke out of it now.

I bought a carey magic inch estate in very good condition this afternoon.

smokes weird until after a litte research I found that they require carey's paprite (if that is how you spell it) filters.

without them it felt like I was sucking air and not smoke.

when the filters arrive I'll give it another chance.

Meanwhile it is a nice pipe for my collection.
