Make sure the paper filter is lined up correctly to cover the holes, otherwise you won't be able to get a good draw. On my initial smoke of mine, I couldn't get a good draw; I had misaligned the liner and there was no seal.

I had one decades ago. They seem to work, i.e. the paper thing absorbs and dissipates moisture. It's not really a filter. I got good smokes from mine. I just don't care for the stem to shank fitting. It's an engineering esthetic thing with me. Plus, after gaining some experience, I stopped drooling and looking for gimmicks on pipes. I'm not knocking them. I'd rate it as the best of the gimmick pipes (if you don't count Falcons) and if it works for you, smoke it.

The other thing I discovered smoking my EA Carey pipes is that if you pull the stem off to check the state of the papyrate tube, is that when putting the stem back in you can catch the edge of the papyrate on the stem and open its seam.

If you're trying to light the pipe and nothing happens no matter how forcefully you draw on the pipe, either the papyrate is missing or its seam has been opened.

The good old Carey 'Angry Inch' Pipe! I used to love the newspaper adverts for the pipes from the Sunday Express featuring the fellow who looked like everyones Father...

I found the draw too airy. It depleted the flavor. I kept the pipe for years, but finally gave it away. It wasn't much to look at either. Like many, I was attracted to the very low price, but it wasn't worth it.

If you want an inexpensive pipe that smokes well, but not a cob, I suggest the MM hardwood, which is less than six dollars.

I never cared for the ones I had and have since gotten rid of them. I believe that you will find that there are better pipes out there for a reasonable price. If you want a good American pipe at a good price buy a Dr. Grabow, Kaywoodie or Medico. Before you are done with your pipe smoking journey you will have so many pipes that you will forget that you had a Carey magic.

Carey's are kind of a hit or miss kind of thing. Some people swear by them others swear at them. Don't worry about what others think, just try it an judge it yourself. If you like it great and if not you didn't invest a lot of money in it.

I have 2 and I like 'em! They really do work will with the inexpensive sleeves, but before I got some of those I would just put my thumb and forefinger over the vents when lighting and have plenty of draw. After I had a good ember in the bowl, I could leave the vents open with no real problems. I did notice that a bowl doesn't last as long, probably due to increased oxygen to the bowl even when I'm not puffing. Happy smoking!

Missouri Meerschaum is a great choice as well if you want a all purpose general tank of a pipe. Also easier to pass by the wife

“Wife said no to a Peterson, she’ll say yes to Missouri Meerschaum!” - that could be their ad. ?

Everyone has their opinion so.... Instead of a Pete try a high grade Italian pipe such as a Castello, Caminetto, Ser Jacopo or Mastro de Paja. If your budget won't allow a new one there are a lot of great used ones out there. To me, for what it's worth, they smoke much better than a Peterson. puffy
