I received a tin of H&H Burley Kake a few months back from a baccy lotto and can say without a doubt there wasn't ANY moisture left inside, bone dry. I unfortunately cannot say how old the "tin" was to begin with so that doesn't help with the question of longevity.

I assume plastic container do the same job as long as the seal is alright? I don't really buy anything I don't plan to smoke soon, but I still like to put loose/bulk tobacco somewhere other than bag it comes in

When used with food items, that type of tin (sealed) seems to last for years. One caveat: it is not as forgiving of deep dings as all-metal tins.

I do not assume that at all, but I am sure that some plastics at a suitable thickness will be just fine. Others, not so much. I imagine there's research on this, but I don't have time now to try to find it.

I don't think tins/cansiters of anything other than metal should be cellared. You're trying to keep the content airtight. I just opened a three-year old jar of Triple Play which had outgassed considerably. I wouldn't count on that amount of pressure being contained by cardboard. I'm a purist regarding aging, however, so please take my opinion with a grain of salt. I even jar tins immediately in jelly jars. Just me. But I go for solid containment all the way.

I wish all tobacco came in the shoe polish tins. They take less space than the cheese dip containers. When I open a "tin" of either type, I jar it, which takes even more space.
