Easy. Alcohol is socially acceptable, smoking is not. You can't compare the two vices. Using one to argue for, or against, the other isn't logical. Two entirely different subjects. Society accepts highway carnage in a way it will not, at this time, accept smoking.

I offer a simpler explanation: society needs alcohol. Without it, few people would be able to bear their exciting modern lives. And so a few dead on the freeway to keep the system going? More rice for the rest of us.

I don't understand why there are so many ads against smoking and so many that show how awesome drinking alcohol is. I've never known someone who smoked then got into a car and killed a bunch of people.

Good point...it reflects no common sense. But the collective mind (society) is always less than the sum of its parts.
I think what really lies at the core of it is that tobacco was chosen to be the scapegoat for the entire cancer epidemic. The "cancer industry" is mostly a giant fraud, but that's a whole other can of worms. But the point is that the sheeple had to be given something to focus their ire on in regard to the cancer epidemic. It's worked well for a long time now because the collective mind is very slow. But it's starting to wear thin now that so many young children are getting cancer.

Agreed. No one wanted to look at the elephant in the room -- industrial and automobile pollution -- so smoking became a scapegoat, just like the Jews in Nazi Germany, the Satanists in the 1980s, the anarchists in the 1900s and (now) the alt-right and Trump supporters. Humans always love to blame something other than their own bad decisions.
