Not new to pipe smoking, well to some I am just starting out. I recently bought a Stanwell HCA Canted Egg. out of the 80+ pipes I own this is my 1st canted bowl.

My question is, is there a trick to packing the bowl. when I fil it like would normally fill a billiard, the draw is almost like sucking pudding through a straw. I've been putting a pipe cleaner through the draft hole and filling it, and it smokes great. I love the pipe and am going to smoke it anyway just wondering if anyone else has come across this issue.

Is it the cant of the bowl or is it an issue with the hole/shank/stem?
I don’t know, just pondering aloud.
I ask because I don’t see how the orientation of a bowl, which is purely aesthetic, would affect the draft.
But then again, I don’t know much.

I don't know either, I just thought with the bowl leaning forward and the draft hole at the bottom back of the bowl it was getting blocked when I tamped. so, I blocked it with a pipe cleaner before filling, and all was well. I ordered some Nording Keystones today can't Hurt right?

Right! I use Keystones when smoking the tougher, more rustic flakes that I cube cut. Love em.

I have a couple Italian billiards (they love to cant the shape) and another canted pipe from an old British maker. This has never been an issue. Like the others, me thinks it is an airway issue that has nothing to do with the shape. I love my Stanwells, but I wouldn't classify them as fastidious about airway construction. I've had to scrape out a drill bur on one, and with another, I have to play with the pipe cleaner a bit in order for it to pass (on a shape that shouldn't have that problem). One of the reasons I like Stanwell is that they tend to have an old school, smaller diameter airway (sharing that attribute with the Italians).

I smoke moonshine devil dogs, deviled eggs, and Devil anses. All canted, never had an issue, I just pack it like normal and smoke it. Though I will say Peterson had a thing about how to pack the system pipes, maybe give that a shot once and see if it helps. Let me see if I can find the diagram before I hit send. —

Now this may not work, I’m just putting it here on the off chance it does, but it seems like if you put that first pinch like this, it may stop the clogging or blocking whatever is happening to your draft. After that first pinch pushed back in that direction, you just fill as normal. IMG_1730.jpeg

I like pipes with canted bowls, and Dublins too, and never had any problem with airflow, regardless of what cut of weed I pack (though I think that cube c ut may be asking for trouble). I echo what others have said, and suggest that it's a draught problem, possibly to do with the level of the airway aperture in the base of the bowl.

If when the pipe is empty, and the drawer is normal, then you’re simply packing it too tight pull the tobacco out start over and try again pack it lightly light it and tamp it lightly

I might have said this but my one canted bowl is very canted and the way the draft hole sits makes packing not dramatically different but different enough that I have to be more careful. Mainly with the first pinch of tobacco. It seems to work best if I fill it super lightly and focus all of the packing on just the top third or less of the chamber. I hope that makes sense.
Basically the bottom of the chamber is just enough tobacco to make a scafold for the stuff you want to smoke. Also you'll know you've gotten it right when the dottle is next to nothing.
