We made the 15 hour drive from Louisiana to Maryland on Monday, the first hour on rural roads. I saw some of that machinery and wondered what they were doing!

I feel greatly informed having learned from posts in a previous year about how cane is planted; cane stalks are laid down longwise in a row and the new stalks sprout from them. I'm glad the new harvest is in.

At the rate my wife uses sugar in baking, the cane harvest and sugar prices bear watching.

Years ago I used to drive past a sugar beet refinery in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk and you could smell that place miles away.
