I don't have money to burn, I just choose how I spend my disposable income and like pipes. Others buy booze or fancy cars or rifles.
My apologies it was not my intention to take a shot at you or start a argument.

Having never had a quantity that was anywhere near that number, it's really an unanswerable question for me.
That said, based on the number I DO have (about two dozen) I'm going to say that I think I probably could ... for me, some of mine have been with me for a good part of my life and have witnessed the birth and raising of my children ... they've gone through several moves from one home to another and have ridden with me in more than a few different vehicles ... I suppose that if I were to somehow double the number of pipes I have, perhaps the newbies wouldn't be as much loved since they wouldn't share that history ...
However, I doubt I'll be taking on that many more ... probably a judicious few here and there as the spirit dictates, but there'll be no concerted effort to expand on what I now have, so my imaginary answer will have to stand.

I just counted and I'm at 57 pipes, some of which I haven't smoked in a couple years and some I smoke once a week. I tend to cull pretty regularly, so if I don't think I'll go back to a certain pipe it usually goes. However, I keep some pipes out of sentiment and I keep some pipes just because I can, they don't cost me anything to sit in my racks and they don't eat much!

I think a nice stable for me would include a few 7 day sets and then some random pieces. Forty or fifty sounds like an upper limit to me.

I look forward to the day when I can answer this question from experience, but given my current collection and my "wish list," I could absolutely love more than 50 pipes. In addition to being good smokers, I love the look of many pipes, so even if I can't manage 50 in a regular rotation, I would still love them for the pieces of art that they are.

Can I love more than 50 pipes? Yes! I honestly don't know exactly how many pipes I have, but would estimate somewhere around 90 good ones, and a bunch of junkers that I use for restoration practice. Like Peck, I find pleasure in the hunt. It makes for a pleasant diversion from the pressures of career, etc.
I also know that I like variety. No matter how wonderful the particular pipe, repeated use brings about boredom. I will look at that cherished favorite and say, "Oh no, not you again."
So I rotate my rotations. Some pipes get to rest for a month or two. And then it's like a honeymoon all over again. I also like variety for other reasons, like a choice of bowl size, or shape or finish. Variety is the spice of life.
I guess I'm just a pipe slut.

I think the answer is yes, but it pays to know what you like and to build your collection carefully. The mistake I made in the beginning is not really knowing what I liked. I'd see a pipe and yes, it may have been beautiful, but it really wasn't my style and so it got neglected. If you're like me, I think it's important that you not just like a pipe, but love it. This way, whatever pipe you reach for, you're happy to smoke it.
I know I like billiards (and liverpools as well as some Dublins). I now have a nice collection of 24 pipes and all get smoked. If I had money to burn like Peck (teasing!), I'd happily own another 24.

Whenever I get more than 25 or so I start to thin the herd. More than that makes me feel greedy and neurotic. I don't think anybody else is haywire for having 50+ pipes, but I think I would be.

I'm a habitual collector, and I don't mind admitting that! I have close to 50 pipes in my collection of all shapes, sizes and makes. While some of them get smoked more than others, they all see action, and I love them all! Some hold more sentimental value more than anything, some I admire for their shape and construction, and some are just phenomenal smokers!

No offence taken easy. I don't mind arguments anyway - I spend much of my day arguing.
Sounds like my 11-year old. We're resigned to the fact that he will probably end up being a very successful lawyer.

I'm at 102 so far, and love every one of them. There had to be a reason why you bought the pipe(s) in question, and if you decided to pull the trigger, there was an aspect of the pipe that made you want to have the pipe. Do each get equal smoking time? No not at all. Some haven't even been smoked, but I love them anyways. They could just sit there and I can admire them...
