I'm going to try..

I just ordered a quarter pound of both red cake and stoved black Virginia.
I'll post here with my thoughts. Should have them on Monday.

The stoves not a flake is it? The stove that i have smoked 5105 is all crumbled up i think they call it broken. Still worth a try.

I've never had Red & Black, but I have mixed 5100 & 2035 with great results

Both the red and black are in flake form. I doubt it would be the exact same mixing red cake and stoved black, but it shouldnt be that important. My opinion of Red and Black was a clever way by MCC to introduce smokers to their high quality flakes to explore and experience different virginia goodness. I'm almost finished with one of my tins. It was fun to play with.

The tin note is amazing. At first my mind pictures golden raisins then immediately roles over to a sweet alfalfa. It takes me back to stacking hay bales in the, east 80, red barn. I am not connoisseur, nor a huge fan, of Virginia's so I could not tell you the slight taste differences between the two. I will however tell you, after my first tin, I did order some to cellar and I look forward to smoking it again 5 years from now.

At present I'm smoking a near 50/50 mix of the 5100 and 5105 (likely the closest bulk comparison to the red&black).

While I can definitively say it's not the same thing (there are some very similar notes while smoking though), it's a damn good combination.

I'm going to put an ounce of each into a very small jar and hide it away so they can intermingle a few years. Maybe I'll resurrect this thread down the road with my findings.

I think that what Red And Black did was to show folks that they could mix up different flakes for a more interesting smoke. I do like Red And Black very much, but I have been mixing flakes for quite a while. My all time favorite mix is Dark Star ground up and mixed with just about any red Virginia, flake or not. Red And Black is good, but I don't think that there was anything special about either of the two flakes that are mixed to make it.

The only Dark Star I have currently is cellared..at least until the remaining jarred Blackwoods I have is gone.
I'm going to be mixing and matching many things with this 5100.
