About four months ago I got some Old Gowrie for the first time. And it was awesome. The tin note was deeply sweet with raisins and just amazing. But recently I got a new tin, but instead of the really sweet fruity scent I got hay, grass and just a little bit of raisins.

I prefer the smell of the first one but I have no idea which one actually tastes the best, if they even taste different.

The causes that I could think of is tin age and maybe a variance between batches?

Do you have any idea?

The only Rattray's tin I've opened was a Red Raparee which had a very sweet, stewed plum (?) tin note. The paper was also yellowing, so I suspect an old tin (they don't date them at all, so it's hard to tell). I suspect that might be the most likley cause.

The Red Raparee is delicious, oncidently, and I have and Old Gowrie I am waiting to open myself.

Most likely the age. I’ve even gotten hints of acetic acid from really fermented Rattrays Virginia blends.

Yup; age. Time opened, your own mood; what you've recently ingested, and so on.

Please note also there's often a big discrepancy between tin note, taste, and room note.
