I don't know what it is about birdseye that I love so much but damn I can stare at it for days. Some of Eltangs pieces are the most beautiful pipes I have ever seen because of the birdseye. The way he gets his golden contrast stain to make the birdseye just jump out at you is mind boggling. Have you ever seen his Eskimo pipe? The birdseye on those are too die for. I am not a fan of the pipe shape at all, just love the birdseye on them.

I just linked to Greg Pease's pictures without knowing it for the Eltang eskimo pipes and, what is amazing besides the Eskimo's is that he has two of my pipes on his site, both are Rad Davis sandblasts. One is a 1/4 of the way down on the right, it is my Rad Billiard, the light colored one with a killer blast. The second Rad is about a 1/3 of the way down in the middle of the page. It is a orangeish colored Dublin with a bottle of Old Spice in the background. That was the first Rad estate I ever bought and it was from 06. You can tell it was his early work as the shaping was off a bit and the blast wasn't very good. It is a flake smoking machine though.
I wonder why he has them on his site, I feel honored.

Whether the shape or blast was a bit off a bit doesn't matter a lick. You have a discerning eye for what you want and your taste is impeccable.
But, my lips to God's ear, Harris, your "Well, meh..." burners humble the rest of us and our collections.
I have some lovely pipes, but I'll take a knee and tug my forelock to yours any day of the week, brother.

The Rad's aren't on his site. That is a collection of images pulled up by Google Images. Your pipes were actually posted on this site, which you can tell if you link to it.
Harris, for Castello smooths, the K designation indicates grain quality and not size as they do for the OAs and Sea Rocks. So in the view of Castello, the KK has better grain than the K within the particular Castello smooth marquee.
Eltang is certainly a master at staining and exposing grain. Here is one egg I have of his:

peck, thanks for the explanation of my pics. That Eltang is the bomb, that is what I call serious birdseye. I used to know that about the K's on Castello's as I would chase kkkk's and Fiammata's, my freaking brain has turned to mush for forgetting that.

Thanks for the picture of birdseye in a blast Jarit. That's the first time I ever knew what it looked like in a blast and the picture you found is a great "show and tell" piece to illustrate that look.

Hi sparrowhawk,

Bird's eye maple comes to mind when I think "wood".

Typically it is a very small circular grain pattern dotted through-out the piece.

It is very appealing in furniture making for table tops etc.

I would like to see it in a pipe, but haven't as of now.
