I dip my shank brushes in this and use them for cleaning of both stem and shank. I just wondered if they hurt the shank or not

Cool water from the tap and dish soap applied with a pipe cleaner for me. Non-scratch ScotchBrite (the sponge side) for the shank's exterior. Works on both acrylic and the cheap plastic mouthpieces cobs come with. Same as washing a martini glass!
Haven't tried it on vulcanite, though.

Rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol works just as well as Everclear and is a lot cheaper. It evaporates quickly and leaves mo taste or aroma in the pipe. You can use it to clean the inside of shanks and stems, but be careful not to let it get on the outside of your pipe because it can ruin the finish. If it does, wipe it off right away and you should be OK.
