I gather conventional wisdom says you smoke, then remove leftovers, perform maintenance, and Only Then reload. And I wonder why.
I look at a bowl with relatively dry ungoopy but unsmokable bits. Looks like a nice filter to me.
Remind me why I can't add tobacco on top of that without dumping it, or shall Darwin have his way with me.

No reason why not.
I’ve seen pipes that look like they have never seen a cleaner let alone a reamer.
One imagines that that’s how many a codger smoked their pipes

But would you eat off an uncleaned dinner plate or use unwashed cutlery ?
😏

Maybe if I were incinerating it to ingest it-apples to oranges maybe. 😉

I wouldn’t top a half burned bowl with something else and expect it to be good, but I have to confess there’s been more than once that I’ve been working and rather than smoking the smoke I set down, then reloading after dumping dottle that I just knocked the ash off and tipped the bowl with the same blend and fired it up.
…. and I lived and didn’t puke.
As you said, if it’s not a goopy wet dottle it should be ok.
I don’t think there’s any “poor pipe form police” that’ll jam you up for doing whatever you like.

Yep many smoked their pipes until there was so much cake you couldn't fit a Virginia Slim into the bowl

My father was a perfect example of that. Had only one pipe at a time and smoked it all day everyday. Would tap it on the palm of his hand and whatever came out, that was it. He'd put new tobacco in and light it up. Occasionally used a pipe cleaner and occasionally scraped the bowl with his pocket knife, but not very much. He used paper matches and he only smoked Granger that he complained about in his later years because he said their quality went down.....

I do this often. I’ll top off a pipe by sprinkling a cube cut like Crooner or Granger to the rim. No harm. No foul.

I actually prefer to parfait most bowls from the start anyway. For example: 3/4 Granger - 1/4 Crooner. -Cube cut burns better and gets things going well and I do enjoy the gradual changeover of flavors.

If I return to a pipe that’s half full, I scrape and dump ash so that mainly unburnt tobacco remains, then top off with whatever I wish to smoke. The O/P is correct. After checking the draw and feeling good, fill er up. Why waste any tobacco?

I can do this because I don’t ever smoke goopy, wet blends. My tobacco choices burn cool and dry. I’m not downing aro’s but I’d dump and wouldn’t top off wet remnants.

Those go into the Persian Slipper along with Kale. You know, they say if you sauté Kale in coconut oil, it slides easier from the frying pan into the trash.

Whatever floats your boat. We have had forum members who wash and recycle pipe cleaners. One of two posters here are 'Dottle Jockeys' in that they save up their pipe dottles and smoke them. Personally I think that is because they have read too many Sherlock Holmes stories. If it makes you happy then more power to you.

I would think Dad is speaking to the Pinkerton years, and it wasn’t only Granger. Velvet also was thought to have a play dough-like, burning plastic thing going on. STG took over circa 2014 and in my opinion improved these blends.

Not sure what you mean by "unsmokable" . If its ash or partly ash , that wouldn't seem to help the taste .

I'll never have this problem as my pipe is always wet after use .........

He passed away in 1989. I see that the Pinkerton's were bought out in 1985 so that might be about right.

My two schools of thought...

I'll top off and keep smoking, if all I want is to keep smoking.
I'll empty the bowl, clean, and grab another pipe to reload if I am smoking for taste and experience.
It all just depends on what you want. There's no rules, nor police that will Billy club their way into your home if you should wish to do differently.

Let the new year bring us all new experiences, and please... new tobaccos to try.

I love packing the bottom half of the bowl with Half & Half and the top with SRW original, burns so well.
