The simplest explanation is usually the correct one. Therefore it is obviously an artifact from a tangent universe.

"Artifacts provide the first sign that a Tangent Universe has occured.

If an Artifact occurs, the Living will retrieve it with great interest and curiosity."

@georged if we are gonna open up the possibility of extraterrestrial provenance, then I would like to table another narrative.

This pipe is actually a pipe which Lee made for himself and left unstamped apart from the date he prophesied for his eventual death - November 5th 1961. He foretold that he would pass in the mother land chocking on a mushy pea with his chips and left without any vinegar to wash it down.

This explains the correct order of the date numerals, and obviously why the pipe was not sold he under his own brand as he fitted it with an inferior push tenon. And also provides probable cause for how it ended in the hands of a greasy ex-Dunhill factory worker who managed to flog some stamps and a spare bit of white spot rod to increase its value on eBay. If only he had the foresight to use a “not for sale” stamp too it would have gone for much more.

Now that's just plain awesome, right there. ^^^^^

A fun bit about time travel...

If you really, actually, literally and truly had a "phone booth style" time machine you could set to any date thousands of years in either the past or future--meaning step in, set the date, push a button, step out---it would be suicide to use.

Anyone care to guess why?

(It would automatically allow for Earth's movement through space, btw, so that's not it.)

I suppose one might make an argument about the conservation of mass and energy, though perhaps your mass would simply be a zero net change. Possibly a question of entropy?

What an exquisite pipe!

@guyless: Do you know if Howard S. Smith, who used to be the Fellowship Secretary of the Fellowship of the White Spot, is still in Dunhill's employ?
Sad to say, Yang would have been your man to answer this. My own Dunhill interest--tobacco aside-- tends to wane sharply with the beginning of the 1950s. . . .

It's less theoretical and more mechanical:

Your body's immune system would have not been exposed to ANY of the current viruses or bacteria you'd suddenly be immersed in, so you'd instantly "catch everything".

The only way to get around the problem would be to spend months or years somehow gathering the bugs with the phone booth, followed by full laboratory vaccine development for each of them, so you could be immunized before stepping into the machine.

The planetary version of the problem is why the War of the Worlds ended.

Or you could just go back about 70 years...that would be optimal imo. I definitely would not want to go forward...at all...nothin' but a hellscape in that direction by all indications.

Speaking of time travel, there was a really interesting independent film called Primer that dealt with the subject in an original way, but it was low budget. I only saw it once many years ago and don't remember all the details, but it's worth a look.

Maybe. Depending on just when you time travel to, you might actually have superior immunity. Consider the recent theory that one of the reasons we suffer from certain conditions today is that some of our ancestors who survived the Black Death, did so because they had genetic differences that conferred some immunity. The genetic bottleneck they created by living when so many died meant that some less desirable traits were passed on.

I asked Yang about the pipe. Here is what he says @georged

5 digit shape numbers was added in 1976 and ended in 1984. 5 (group/size). 16 shape (bent chimney) & 1 first variation. That 1 after 5 is for mouthpiece. In that case, standard for the shape.
