I like German Beer better!
Also, I favor a thick cake because it allows my pipe to smoke cool, and it's a badge of honor as well...

Hi Yaddy,
Depending on it’s physical form, carbon can have incredibly high thermal conductivity such as graphene but you’re right that pipe cake isn’t highly conductive but it’s higher than briar (wood) so it’s effective. If the cake were less conductive than the briar the heat would remain in the bowl (and we know that it doesn’t).
Cake buffers the cherry from the briar and most bowl damage is caused by direct contact that can cause spidering or burn outs.

To all you folks who think cake is something for only birthdays, go read neverbend's outstanding explanation about why you should build a proper cake in your pipes. Go over to smokingpipes.com and look at all the estate pipes that have spider webbing in them. Those pipes are useless as me and people I know would never buy one no matter what the price. Cake protects your investment, it makes your tobacco taste better, pipe people have been extolling the virtues of cake for over 100 years. Now start building the damn cake or the pipe police will come a knocking. :nana:
