I've been busy lately and have allowed my pipes to develop some cake. I've also noticed that my bowls don't last as long as they used to.
During the weekend I finally made an effort and reamed my pipes and suddenly a bowl of FVF lasts 2,5 hours again.
So I did some math.
If the chamber has a diameter of 20 mm and it grows 2 mm of cake, the volume decreases by 1/3.
If the chamber is 18 mm diameter and grows 2 mm of cake, volume decreases almost by half.

I also notice a big difference volume wise when I ream a pipe and my cake never gets that thick either.

It can make a noticeable difference in chamber volume. That was the main reason I quit trying to build up cake. A happy byproduct is that the pipes taste fresher without it in my opinion. I started doing the paper towel ream after each smoke, and then started rinsing chamber out with warm water. Haven’t missed the cake one bit. And none of my pipes are scorched from not having it, either. I think that’s an old myth, probably derived from guys getting their pipes way too hot. Smoke it properly, and there’s no need for cake, unless the briar has serious flaws in the chamber or something.

I never let cake build up simply because I can't stand the taste of resin, however, I do highly respect your mathematical approach to the discussion.

The first time I reamed a pipe I got the same revelation. Weirdly I smoked that one more often with the cake because it's a pretty big chamber and the reduction in size gave me a more convenient amount of time to get a smoke in. That pipe rarely gets used for flakes but when it does what fun sometimes I'll get what feels like a magical endless smoke.
