Shutterbugg - Just for a giggle. I went to several different on-line translations after reading your last post. They disagree with you. The majority translated Grosse téte as big head. On the other hand, Babylon gives the translation as "big, thick, fat; large, heavy; coarse; full, stout, chubby"
But you are absolutely correct about Louisiana French being a different dialect than Parisian French. It's because the Acadians who were kicked out of Nova Scotia by the English assimilated with the native American tribes living in the bayous and took some of their words. Pretty much the same as the difference between Castilian Spanish and the Spanish language spoken in the different parts of Mexico.
I have never seen or heard the French word "beau" translated as anything close to the word "big" though. I've only seen it as "beautiful, good looking, nice, handsome; pretty, etc.)
The standard French translation of Beau Jocque would, of course be Handsome James or Jack. I don't know where people get the idea that Beau Jocque in the Cajun dialect translate to Big Guy.
