So, I'm a rank newbie, been smoking pipes, in place of cigs, for about 6 months. And I watch MuttonchopPiper religiously, so I am aware that I'm doing it wrong. I'm really trying to develop a palate but I'm wondering if its a lost cause, I love Captain Black. However I was lucky enough to find a proper blend that I enjoy and which coincidentally, is named after my father: C+D's "Nutty Irishman." I have been smoking it most of the time. Since I live in Maine (I did say in the new member section that I was here to whine about Maine.) I can't mail order pipe tobacco so I have been mostly relying on Cigaret Shopper and their ability to order C+D products. Which has been fine until I moved a practical 2 hours away from one. This, along with having other hobbies in the same bent, has led me into the long term storage game. Long story short; I have been doing my own research but it seems like there is a lot of opinion, usually from experience it seems, driving the party line. I hear square tins are a possible weak link but the puck shaped ones stand a better chance against time. Can I leave C+D tins unopened for the long haul? And perhaps this should just be another thread but; what other tobacco's would you guys suggest in that vein? I have a tin of CAO's "Eileen's Dream" that smells great but didn't really have perhaps, strong enough flavor. I'm not looking for overwhelming funk or anything but I do tend to enjoy the vanilla end of the aro spectrum and seem to dislike the straight English blends. I am however determined to be well rounded in the long term.

C&D tins of today aren't an issue for long term storage. There was an issue back in 2016/2017, I think, but that has since been rectified. I (along with many others on here, I'm sure) deep cellar the round pop-top canned tins. You will notice after some time that they will start to bulge, but that's normal. I'm sure some people can say that they've have a tin or 2 "pop", but I have yet to have any of mine do that. If you are hesitant, then just put your tobacco in mason ball jars.

As for flavorful, if you want stronger aromatic blends, take a look at Sutliff Vanilla Custard (bulk blend) or Molto Dolce (tin). Both are what you'd call heavy aromatics.

For what it's worth, I have opened C&D produced tins that I bought with age on them and there has been mold. I don't know how it was stored but I did buy from a B&M.

It's rare but it happens. If I was geographically challenged like you, I would call my spot, place a large enough order to get a taste for what you like and then once you've gotten through those, do it again from a cellaring POV, i.e. only order the ones you really really like and in higher numbers.

I also take advantage of work travel and stop by places I find when away, just to see what is on the shelf.

Lastly, we are luck in the states, C&D is such a great blender and their production is such that it's always available to order....

this seems like a dumb question but; if you find mold do you just trash the tin?

yep. At 10-15 bucks a tin for C&D it's not the end of the world. I am pretty lenient on them. It's a natural product after all.

So far I have had moldy tins from Esoterica, C&D and Sutliff so it's not a C&D exclusive.

Definitely DON'T throw your tins out if they have mold. If it is a C&D, I'm 99% sure that they will replace the tin. Obviously, you lose an aged tin of tobacco, but you can at least get a replacement.

I've only watched enough of his videos to know that he's far to into his own opinions for me to care for. If his content is making you feel like you're doing it wrong, he's done you a great disservice.

If you love Captain Black then it's certainly a proper blend to enjoy.

Yes, I have some nearing 20 years old that are fine.

It can sometimes take long periods of smoking, sometimes years to fully appreciate aromatics.

I am however determined to be well rounded in the long term.
Some spend their entire smoking career smoking a single or only a couple of blends. Do what feels right for you, not what you think others think you should do.

thanks, regarding others opinions and the youtube guys, I'm more or less being sarcastic. I don't tend to be easily influenced but I do like to learn from whatever suffices for elders in the various disciplines I go after for hobbies

clarification: you can get a refund by contacting the maker, but you can throw the tainted tin away once you've made contact. You don't need to hold onto it for them.

thanks, it's obviously a pretty far off possibility but i don't think it would have occured to me that it was still within their purview or whatever after so much time. That's good to know.

When you find your own techniques you'll be amazed at just how little thinking goes into it.

If you like sailing with the Captain why stress about it? Captain Black is a solid smoke, it's been making thousands of pipe smokers happy for generations. I smoke pretty much everything from aros to Gawith Ropes and I always have a can of Captain Black White open on my desk. Try the new Platinum it's good, a bit more tobacco forward than most Captain blends with a light maple caramel casing.

Thanks for the reminder I forgot about the platinum last time I was in town. I'm not particularly stressed about it, more like annoyingly curious and generally malcontent.

I've got a couple C&D tins around. One (Canal Boat, I think) is from 2015 or 2016. It's getting a bit bulgy, but as I understand it, this is pretty normal for these style cans. I suppose you can always just play it safe and transfer to a Ball jar, or to a mylar bag. If that tin popped, knowing my luck it'd probably happen in the middle of the night, and that would certainly scare the shit out of me. :ROFLMAO:
