I've seen that Etsy seller's items and, from some of his photos, I wondered just how clean they really are: I think I know the answer now!

The Dunhills belonged to Alfred Hitchcock. Gus' Smoke Shop bought the collection from his family. I just happened to drop in while they were unpacking the pipes and as a regular customer, was offered first dibs.
I bought a couple of bents, which were quite small and pretty filthy, and that's the whole story. Not much of a thread there, I'm afraid, but another thread does occur to me and I'll post it.

There are laws regarding truth in advertising that, to the best of my knowledge, have never been applied to independent sellers on dBay and other sites:

http://www.ftc.gov/news-events/media-resources/truth-advertising

The control that exists is the feedback received from the seller. The best way to sell is being honest to a fault; the best way to buy is expect faults in the item listing.

I agree, when using non-pipe vendors, expect the worst and be pleasantly surprised. I just bought an unsmoked Upshall, complete with awful pictures. Would it truly be unsmoked? Non-pipe sellers really are guessing. Would the stem be stuck, broken and glued? Who knows. I was pleasantly surprised on this one, with a thread to follow. Did I get lucky? Yep.

I completely sympatize with the OP. I hate having a "clean and ready to smoke" pipe turn out to be neither. It sucks but that is the way it tends to be. I myself always warn on pipes that I sell that even though I've cleaned it to my standards, you may have different standards so always check a new estate pipe.
To those who run a few pipe cleaners and then smoke, I wish you well. The crap I've pulled out of the stems, shanks and mortises of pipes is pretty nasty and I would not like to have it in my mouth.

I saw a pipe once that had a 10 year old bowl pack still stuck in it.
I am not a clean freak but even a clean looking pipe that was used would get a good sterilizing cleaning from me.

Hi Plateau,
I bought them close to 30 years ago, so no "before and after", I'm afraid. When I get a chance, I'll look for them. I haven't smoked them in years and years. But don't get too excited. They just look like a couple of smallish Dunhills, nothing special.
