I have a BC, pictured here with the lacquer finish intact. It smoked OK, but Kevin kept insisting that lacquered pipes
aren't as desirable as naturally finished pipes because they can't breathe -- whatever that means.
So, I carefully removed the lacquer finish by sandpapering. I was astonished! Not only did this reveal a number of fills,
but the smoking quality of the pipe really improved. I went on to remove the lacquer from another pipe with similar
success. I really believe BC uses lacquers and paints to conceal fills. The pipe I have, at any rate, smokes very well.
As can be seen by comparing the before and after pix, the well used pipe never changed its high tone color while lacquered.
Whereas it started coloring (darkening) quickly after I removed the lacquer, so I'll concede that Kevin has a point.
