First things first, they're fantastic especially when done right.

I get mine from a little local French bakery.

I'm not sure just how much butter they use to make them but I know it's the right amount. They're so buttery and have a great flakey almost crispy outside with a soft fluffy inside that has a wonderful toothiness that's almost like an al dente pasta.

And their chocolate croissants are the bomb too.

I feel sorry for people who can only get what their grocery store offers (which are better than nothing) and not quality croissants.

One of the nicest things about a trip to Melbourne to visit my older son and his family is a trip to Lune Patisserie for their croissants.

My favourite is their ham and cheese. Especially with a strong cappuccino or hot chocolate for breakfast.
Otherwise a plain croissant with honey or Seville Orange or grspefruit marmalade

About 40 yrs ago (literally) Au Bon Pain in Harvard Sq and Faneuil Hall had the most fantastic fresh croissants, long long before they were a massive chain, as they expanded they slowly then more quickly went downhill. It’s a shame because i would slaughter an entire village for their original almond croissants, warm and sticky out of the oven, they were heaven. But with anything if your business plan is to grow and not worry about the quality of the product it turns to bupkis.

the almond croissants were filled with a fresh mixed almond butter and then drizzled with honey so almond slices would stick to the top.

Nevermind the croissants, what's that swirly looking loveliness in the top right corner? 🤤

Thought I didn’t much care for them till I spent some time in France. They were delivered to the various hotels every morning and I learned to appreciate them greatly. Along with so many other things French.
At this point I might as well change my screen name to Gauloises Mourner…😁

I love these things for breakfast or snacks. Although as you rightly say, if they are handmade and well made, then yes they are worth buying. It is difficult to find something of quality in my neighborhood. The best I've tried, have been in a very famous patisserie in Madrid.
I never had a good croissant in Spain, not one. I don't think they use proper butter in making them maybe? Lived in Asturias & worked all over Spain, always surprised me that despite the food everywhere was nothing short of excellent, the croissants always dissapointed.☹️

Believe it or not, most croissant can be turned into edible snack. Slice it in half lengthwise, pop it into oven at 350°, bake for 3 min or less until very lightly charred on edges. As long as the bakery try to make good croissants, it will come out yummy.

When my wife and I rented a studio apartment for 8 days in Paris (2018) I was eating French pastries, croissants and macarons everyday. Usually for breakfast before going out for the day. It's a good thing we did a lot of walking.

Like 1-Q, the store bought croissants have their place.

With a soon to be 3 year old, we make pigs in a blanket (with little smokies sausages - good mustards for dad) and pizza rolls (with pepperoni, pizza sauce, and cheese) during daddy daycare. She "helps" sometimes, but usually makes a mess.

It's quick, easy, and family friendly. Another quick fix is topping chicken pot pie gravy (shredded rotisserie chicken, cream of chicken soup, frozen peas and carrots, various herbs and spices) with Grands biscuits.

Hersey, I know. But I don't hide in shame.

Every sunday my dear mother would go out very early in the morning and get us all fresh sunday mornin' buns
from one of the local bakers just across the street. And sometimes she'd also get plain but fresh and warm croissants, one for every person.
I'd cut mine in half lengthwise and just spread some extra butter before diving in. It makes my mouth water up and tingle when I think about it. Very nice times.

Nowadays I have even more vices going on, so the usual morning feast has been replaced by physical training,
peppermint tea and the ceremonial morning pipe afterwards... or before. Or, let's be honest, both.
And breakfast/lunch has been replaced by a big bowl of oats with a little chopped dark chocolate and fresh milk.

However, I still get weak in the knees when I ride by bakeries on an early sunday morn'.
The smell alone, you could live for just that and go on strong. Another paradox of life, I love it.
