I've been smoking pipes for the better part of a decade and encountered what appears to be my first case of burn-out.

I got a new Ropp J07 which I intended to be an English smoker (I normally smoke virginias). On the second smoke, I got that campfire like aroma I was expecting... wait, why is the bowl so hot?

Inspection revealed spider webbing on the inside of the bowl opposite of the stem. Some light rubbing removed charcoal like material down to briar about 1" by 0.5" by 1/8".

This is burnout, right? Has anyone ever encountered something like this?

Is the pipe usable and/or repairable or is it better just to bin it?

Thanks.

It looks like a manufacturer fill. You may have rubbed the charcoal liner off of it. I agree with Burleybreath but would make up some pipe mud to reline the inside of the bowl then just smoke it as normal to build up a cake layer.

Out of @200 pipes, I have had this happen just once - with a new light coloured morta.

The odour of burnt/charred wood is very distinctive. And easily distinguishable from burning tobacco.

I didn’t want to return the pipe as it was a commission with a horn stem.

A couple of coats of pipe mud fixed the problem.

PS the maker kindly offered a replacement IF the problem persisted.

Not a burnout, but a small problem easily cured with pipe mud and careful smoking of a dozen bowls or so.

As was mentioned, the problem could be resolved with applying pipe mud.

Then again, most people wouldn’t tolerate a section of the chamber wall going up in smoke on a new pipe.

Get in touch with vendor about a replacement. I’m sure in this case they would have no problem replacing it.
