I'm not sure what the rest of you were seeing but I couldn't see a problem.

@NaCL I'd not ever take a back to bare briar [Unless restoring a well used estate pipe]
Nonetheless your pipe is good to go.

General rule of thumb is to ream / sand back to near or to bare wood before salt treatment. The pipe started life as bare wood and can restart from bare wood again.
