@NaCL I'd not ever take a back to bare briar [Unless restoring a well used estate pipe]

Buy the carpenter an ale and do the pipe a favour by keeping it cakeless from now on.

Might just be reflection, but you might want to put some finish on the rim.
I won't recommend what sort of finish, but I do recommend something to protect the wood vs leaving exposed natural wood.

I think you need to worry less about if you're doing things right the worst thing that can happen is you ruin a pipe. Which should be avoided if possible but it is just a pipe and there are no pipe police, not even in france.

General rule of thumb is to ream / sand back to near or to bare wood before salt treatment. The pipe started life as bare wood and can restart from bare wood again.
