I would honestly think that something with that briar had to be flawed to see that kind of damage in two smokes?
I agree with that statement. Just don't see how it would be possible to burn a good solid pipe that badly with just two smokes, even a brand new pipe, unless you stuck it out the window of your car at 60MPH--and held it there.

I've seen flaws that would cause that in a couple of blocks I've drilled for pipes.

I grabbed this pic from somewhere on this forum for my personal reference. It shows how a flaw can be hidden quite well within the briar, even with Peterson's experience it could be missed. Only after a cut away or as in your case a couple bowls may it reveal itself.

First off, welcome aboard!

Secondly, wow! That's a bad burnout!
I would definitely send that one back. It's a damn shame too, it had some nice grain on it.
My suggestion to you, would be to put the briars down for a while and pick up an MM cob.

Study up on packing, tamping and smoking methods.

Practice sipping at the pipe like you would a fine wine, rather than puffing like a freight train.

Practice good tamping methods, and try different packing methods to see which you like best.

Try holding the pipe while you smoke, if you feel it starting to hear up, then you know you're going to fast.

If you think you're going too slow, you're not!

And remember, it's OK to let the pipe go out. Relights are common (especially with certain blends), and they're not really a bad thing.
Good luck!

Dan

I've receive some very valuable feedback regarding what may be perceived as my pipe smoking shortcomings. I have taken pride in the fact that I could keep a bowl lit on only two matches. The first being the "charring light." As petes03 shared, as well as others, I must sip, I've been gulping. I'm just surprised that I haven't burned out one of my other briars. I suppose the reason I haven't is due to the thickness of the bowls. I will be much more cognizant of my piping, and carry a plentiful supply of matches. Great, great feedback, thanks to all. I will update when, and if, I hear from Peterson.
Cheers to all,

Kevin
