Burley Thoughts

I’m still somewhat new here. My first foray into piping was Early Morning Pipe and Nightcap. Both fantastically flavorful. But sometimes you something less flavorfully strong.

Then I tried Haunted Bookshop. In a small way, it reminded my of the Camel Lights I enjoyed in my youth. Woodsy, cocoay, flavors are very nice. However, HB left me wishing for something more. I liked HB, but it rather falls short, it’s missing something. If Camel made pipe tobacco, I’m in.

I mixed HB with Pirate Kake a 50/50 mix. This really spiced up HB is a very good way. Sort of the best of both worlds. Spicy Latakia in a few puffs, then that wonderous woodsy burley. Then back to spicy Latakia. Maybe less PK and more HB in the next mixing?

I tried Old Joe Kranz early this afternoon. I found OJK more robust and spicy…peppery than HB. This is an excellent smoke. Toward the end of the bowl, the pepperiness was almost too much. I’m still deciding about OJK. HB is like OJK with training wheels. Perhaps mixing the two will improve HB and tone down OJK’s pepperiness?

I enjoyed both HB and OJK, satisfying in different ways.

I don't know what to say. I like all of the tobaccos you mention. Give Kelly's Coin a try. That one is one that I always have on hand.

Maybe you'd like Burley Flake #4... it has a bit of Latakia in it

There are 5 in the Burley Flake series. I personally enjoy #s 1 and 2 the most

I've just this last week been very much enjoying a well-aged tin of BF#3...first time trying it...great stuff.

@MesabiBear you might want to give it a try if the OJK is too perique heavy for you, Another you might want to check out is GLP Cumberland.

Give the HB cake a try, I prefer it over the original. All the burley flakes are good but strong
If you're just looking for a good burley blend, Pegasus is probably what most people are gonna say

I only know 3 general categories of tobacco, Virginias and their blends and flakes, English, and aros, what’s this burley you speak of…?. Sounds like some bad tasting tobacco for weirdos who want to punish themselves,

I have little experience with burley except in blends, but have you tried Virginia flakes? Generally considered the gold standard of good pipe tobacco, and I’d agree, although of course tastes may vary.

I am a Burley loving guy. My first pick is Five Brothers. A straight ahead blend, no frills, smoke with the punch of a prize fighter. I take it in my smallest pipe.

Wish I could help, but I detest Burley. I’ll check in when you ask about straight Virginias, VaPers, and/or English blends. And yes I realize the Perique is Burley, but the processing makes it agreeable to me.
