I do not doubt that burley irritates some people's mouths, and pH and even nitrate levels may have something to do with it. But my personal experience leads me to believe the problem may be not the burley itself but what's typically done to it by the blenders.

This isn’t only about the Casings and Toppings, that might bother people.

Fermenting, steaming, stoved, etc., how these processes are done, could also effect a person. It’s also the makeup of the leaf content variations between other leaf, soil grown, possibly fertilizers used, etc…

Casings and toppings can alter the PH Balance. So whether it’s the ingredients of a casing or topping causing irritation or the ph balance, only by trial and error can someone make that determination, since everyone’s body chemistry is different.

I’ve personally not found casings or toppings as something that bothers me, in quality tobacco blends. Now as for possible cheap blends that might use artificial flavors and chemicals for casings and toppings, it only makes sense things like this might bother some.

My experience is always the same, I barely light the tobacco, and take a very small sip, and I get a slightly sharp sensation on the tip of my tongue sometimes, then I start to get an ache/throb on the roof of my mouth. For me, I believe this is the PH Balance reaction.

Propylene glycol is something that needs serious consideration to the pipe smoker who finds themself always sensitive. And possibly PG is a culprit of sorts here too.

In the end, I say it‘s best to use charcoal or meerschaum filters to help eliminate irritations, especially for those having trouble with blends. Plus for those concerned over all the by products of smoke, these certainly help filter out a lot of the bad. I am finding them quite helpful.
