Burley Based English

Please recommend some burley based english blends

John Middleton Walnut is a good one to start with. C&D had quite a few as well. Also check out the Sutliff blends like CD Mixture, based on Country Doctor.

Bald Headed Teacher is a great Burley forward blend with a touch of Latikia. It is a delicious mild English blend.

I've never sampled any of those, so I wrote them down for future reference. I like burley a lot, both in OTC's and

in Lane's Burley Without Bite, and Lane's mixed with one or two other tobaccos, like Virginia and Calabash. It seems

from past Forums comments that some people get very little if any flavor from burley, but I am one of those who

finds it flavorful.

C&D Epiphany has plenty of Burley and makes for a good English smoke, that isn't as Latakia forward as many English blends tend to be.

If you can find it, the old House of Windsor Barking Dog is a true American classic. A very nice and easy to digest lighter Burley/Latakia blend.

I like Walnut and Peretti's 1072. While I'm not sure if 1072 is a true English, it is a burley with some Turkish as well as some Latakia.

Your right Eric, sorry about that and thanks for the correction. A senior moment LOL, I got the two mixed up! Either way, they both have burley and are really tasty blends.

I think Sutliff's Man's Best Friend is an ode to Barking Dog. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If you want a stout burley based English, check out Montford Point Marine from C&D. It's mostly dark fired burley with latakia and perique. Oh and sit down when you smoke it

For most of my pipe smoking "career", burley-based English mixtures (aka American English) have been my favorite go-to blends. There are a ton of them out there, and it looks like most of the high points have been covered. Bald Headed Teacher, for instance, is an excellent example. C&D's Epiphany is even better, I think, which is only appropriate given their reputation as the best burley blenders on the market today. C&D has several other excellent examples, such as Morley's Best, Old Hollywood, Walter Franklin, etc. Boswell has Countryside, which is a pretty stellar example of this type of mixture, and the Gatlinburlier of Gatlinburg, TN has (what else?) Gatlin-burley, which was my first tobacco of this type and my all-day smoke for more than a decade. Or, you could go the cheap and easy route and mix some blending latakia with Carter Hall in a ratio of about 1:6.

I am a big fan of Cornell & Diehl Crowley's Best. It is burley based with Latakia and Perique.
