my wife bought me a ryobi bench grinder for christmas. i have taken the grinding wheels off and replaced with 6 inch buffing wheels. i have 3 wheels. a sisal wheel,a denim spiral sewn wheel, and a cushion sewn wheel. it is a three step process. i used the buffer yesterday, and the buffer did a ok job. the wheels were slightly loose while buffing. my brother inlaw told me to add another pad to the buffer in order to take up the slack. i purchased another package of buffing wheels last night. i will try agian this morning with a double wheel to see if this helps with a tight pad on the shaft. i did break i cheap pipe yesterday while buffring, i will have to have the tendon replaced. this buffer is 3600 rpm, from what i have read this is too fast, i will have to be careful. iam looking forward to using the buffer this morning. if anyone here has experience using the ryobi buffer, i would like to hear what you guys think. i will try again and let you all know what i think.
thanks and take care.
mike.

well I just called Beall and found out I cannot use their system since my shaft runs clockwise. They said without a couter clockwise rotation the wheels will spin off. Now to figure out if i can reverse the rotation.

The arbor link I posted for Jestco and pictures shows right and left hand thread options, pick the one that works.

Harbor Frieght sells a router speed control for $20. It plugs into the outlet, the buffer plugs into it and you dial down the speed to the desired setting: about 1/2 for a 3750 rpm motor for instance. This could be a possible fix for many folks:

I've looked at that a number of times. I already a 3750 rpm metal buffing motor with two arbors, mounted on a floor stand. I use it for buffing metal, but do far more pipes than metal these days. That might be the answer to twin arbor motor I've been looking for.

hey guys, i have been looking for a thread on buffing waxes with no luck. i have a question reguarding tripoli bar wax. is tripoli used on the bowls and stems? when is the best time to use tripoli wax? i have a stiff 6 inch buffing wheel (sisal wheel). is this the wheel of choice when using tripoli. i have two other buffing wheel dedicated for the white diamond and the carnuba. any help would be appreciated. iam just not sure when and where to apply tripoli wax. thanks. i use the ryobi buffer @ 3600 rpm. i know to be careful with 3600 rpm.
take care.
mike.

In the jewelery field and in general metal work, Tripoli is a pre=polish used to remove scratches and prepare the object for final polish steps. It will remove fine scratches, not deep ones. I have not tried tripoli on wood as of yet, but have used white diamond, and carnauba wax. The pipes I tried that on came out pretty will, but the next time I will go through the steps with:
Tripoli

Rouge or white diamond

Carnauba.
Opinions differ on the types of buffing compounds to use on many of the pipe restoration sites I've looked at. The one thing I know is that the tripoli will leave a dull finish and you will need to proceed with further steps.
Hope this helps

Allan
