Several of our local Amish make their own pipes. Some out of corn, some out of any chunk of wood they can find. It's doesn't matter much. They smoke that $7 a pound "pipe tobacco" from the Indian reservation. It's just cigarette tobacco labeled as pipe tobacco to circumvent the NYS tax on pipe tobacco.

My understanding is that it's a weird material that some rare few prefer, most hate, and some are neutral too. It sounds like a big part of smoking it is going slow and soft in the puffing department. Heard if you can keep it from scorching it is more flavor neutral then anything else. Never tried it seems strange to me and also think they look fake as funk like toy pipes.

I believe you are correct in that they look too much like toy pipes so no one takes them seriously. Especially tried and true pipe smokers that are very particular about how their pipes look. They are not great pipes, but they are definitely not toy pipes. They can provide a really decent smoke if you don't get 3rd degree burns on your hands.

Sounds like the cure is worse then the disease.

"Toy Pipes", that's a pretty accurate description; but, not so much like a Soap Bubble Pipe - more like a movie prop, in that while functional and clean-up super easy, they feel "fake" - to me, anyway.

I have an 8 panel Yello Bole made of Bryon which I love the design of - size, shape, weight, overall look - but; the "fake feel" of it leaves it relegated to pipes I enjoy having in my collection; but, rarely smoke - also in this class would be my: Kirstin, Marxman, and Clay Dragon's Claw - pipes, which are great to have... just to have. - Sherm Natman

Folks, I know that by their very nature, forums tend to hourly beat dead horses into bloody pulps..... And I have cast stones and wielded clubs in this direction myself....

But, we're talking about a piece of wood, or meerschaum, or clay, or corncob, or BRYLON that we put shreds of tobacco in, light it and draw out the smoke. These are beautiful items, but not Swiss made pocket watches or nano-bots.

Yes, they are a synthetic material, I suppose, but it's not like we are using them to smoke dried buffalo chips or something distasteful.

Just not feeling any love for the variation....... ;)
