It burns my tongue! I'm pretty sure this is due to tongue bite but just want to check, do you guys find that toothpaste burns your tongue the night you smoked? It is quite painful at times, and mostly when I smoke consecutive bowls in about a short period of time. However these days it is getting worse and I experience it even when I smoke just one bowl. I also live in a humid country, so drying tobacco is not that easy. I mostly use my Colibri pipe lighter and I find that the smoke is always hot/harsh on the tongue when lighting. It could be the lighter because I have tried many blends using it and it is getting ridiculous. Even Boswell's No Bite Delite did some damage the other day. I can taste most blends and their flavors but get the problem of tongue burn when it's time to brush my teeth before bed...
Could it be tongue chemistry? Or is it just a case of moist tobacco & high temperature pipe lighter?

Absolutely - every time - no matter what the blend. I'd love to hear a reason behind it!

I don't feel like it's an issue for me and sometimes the toothpaste seems sweeter than normal after smoking.

I often brush after a smoke but sometimes I just love the taste in my mouth to linger. Sometimes I gargle after smoking but no unusual burning with either brushing or gargling.

When I brush after smoking I always get a burning type sensation on the tongue as well. I don't think it has anything to do with the type of lighter, type of tobacco and whether its moist or dry and how many bowls you smoke. You're bringing hot smoke into your mouth with each puff which will irritate the taste buds and sometimes enough to get an irritation we call tongue bite. When you're scrubbing your teeth and tongue you'll get that sensation because your taste buds are irritated and they're letting you know they're irritated.

It's not just you - it happens to me too, more often when I have a bowl or bowls toward the end of the day. I've always just thought that it's a mild side effect of tongue bite - but I often get it even if I smoke tobacco that doesn't bite me.

Biotene is a good "first step" after a bowl or 2. I get the toothpaste-burn more if I smoke too fast/hot. I think some blends just over-sensitize my tongue more than others; I assume it's a body-chemistry thing. There are a ton of reasons to smoke slower and cooler, this is one of them. I don't worry too much, and if it's too bad I take it as a lesson in what NOT to do when I'm smoking. :)

Yeah... A good bit of toothpaste burn if I've been misbehaving and smoking too hot (which is all too often...). I find a cool drink of water or something similar (nothing fizzy) after I finish my smoke helps to mitigate it. Or, just waiting a while before brushing.
Winds up the Missus - she's not the greatest fan of me tasting like an ashtray after a smoke!

Yep, it's tongue bite alright. While smoking the pipe, sip slower instead of puffing. Be a little more careful when lighting up and resist the urge to puff too strongly to get it lit. Nice and easy will do it.
As for brushing, I use a Waterpik to cut down on plaque and loosen up anything trapped between my teeth. After that, I brush my teeth & tongue. Yes, if I've been to aggressive on my puffing the toothpaste & brushing may irritate the tongue a bit. Next I use the tongue massage attachment on the Waterpik. It's amazing how much it helps! Of course, this means buying a Waterpik but both myself & my dental hygienist are a lot happier. Pls note I have no connection or interest in Waterpik other than I am a user.
Just sayin'. 8)

tongue bite. Do as those above have suggested. But also quit using toothpaste and use baking soda mixed with water to a paste consistency, followed by a good mouth and tongue gargle of 1/2 water and 1/2 hydrogen peroxide in a glass. If fact if you do this after every bowl, then every next bowl will taste like the first bowl .. at least it works very well for me ;)

Great OP. I used to really suffer from toothpaste burn, but I've worked on my smoking technique and the overall tongue-bite is far less. That's reflected in my night-time teeth care not hurting so much! I also use a generic version of Oraldene (hexetidine) after each brush which keeps any little germs and nasties at bay. Stings a little bit but not for long and worth the effort.

I agree. I quit using toothpaste a few years ago after learning that most brands contain glycerin, which may (or may not -- I make no claims) retard the tooth's ability to re-mineralize. That, added to my already well-established objection to fluoride in toothpaste (not to mention municipal water, but that's a different argument), as well as those micro-beads, caused my switch to baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. I've been extremely happy with the results. The bonus: if I happen to smoke too much or too hot, brushing my teeth helps soothe my mouth.

Lots of good feedback here. I'll add my experience as well. My first tin was an Erinmore Mixture and being the novice I am I literally roasted my tongue with that tin. The Tobacco was wet, my pipe's bowl was too short and being an ex cigarette smoker I was puffing on it like a vacuum cleaner gone full retard. 98% of the time I will brush my teeth and tongue when I am done smoking for the day. There is no point over-brushing your teeth as it will erode your enamel faster. Just clean your tongue after every bowl but wait for 30 mins before doing that. You do not want your tongue to be hurt as well. Avoid mouthwash after you smoke; rather do it first thing in the morning. Cut down the number of bowls by 50% if you're getting too much of tongue bite and get a pipe with a big bowl.
Cheers,

Chris

Sore tongue = smoking too fast. Some can smoke these groups of tobaccos and some others, but in the end, whether the amount of discomfort is large or small, putting less of the hot smoke in your mouth at a time can be used. A guy on another forum said that if you feel your tongue is over-roasted, put the pipe down and resume later.

Just like to address the humid issue in your area.
When I have a very moist tobacco and either the humidity is very high or I don't have the 1/2 hour or more to dry it out, a former member gave me this great suggestion.
Get a strainer and put the tobacco into it and use a hair dryer on low setting not to blast the weed across the room.
In short order, the tobacco will be much drier and easier to light and smoke.
Works for me.

All the time! It's not usually super painful, but my tongue feels the tingles.
I always thought it was just because my tongue was irritated from the smoking, that when the minty-ness of the toothpaste get on it, it kinda just aggravates it.
