If someone gets over on you and you were too dull to notice, does your ignorance of the fact diminish that he took what should have been yours? Similarly, in the world of ideas, does your ignorance of some part of the argument constitute a waiver from the one advancing it? Google is your friend. The dictionary is your friend. If I didn't know who Dr. Johnson was it would take me approximately thirty seconds to find out.
I write poetry. If I use a word I do so advisedly. If I have any doubt that it is the correct word I look it up. As words are tools, so are ideas, and in both cases you have to do the work to know how to use them. Literacy is its own reward.

I find it amazing that a seemingly innocuous thread about 'English' vs 'British' can get so mean spirited so quickly.
