Here's an interesting article on the history of cigarettes from the BBC. It's notable for not only vilifying cigarettes but for NOT vilifying cigars and pipes, with the author pointing out that pipes/cigars aren't as addictive and that lung cancer was freakishly rare before cigarettes were invented....

Interesting read. I like how it's mentioned that if "buck duke" had not developed the process someone else would have. Also, none of the companies forced someone to pick up smoking. Are we going to start blaming liver disease on Anheiser-Busch? Where does it end? Live and let live.

Yeah, but I've never seen a beer company advertise alcohol as a cure for liver disease. It was the deception that got the tobacco companies in trouble, not the fact that they sell an addictive product (at least at first).
