Would you say that a reasonable increase would drive people to be criminals? Shouldn't then everything that is taxed have a respective black market? I hardly see people selling gasoline or alcohol in back alleys.
Everything that is taxed excessively, yes. Look at the difference in beer prices province to province. A case is currently before the Supreme Court over "smuggling" beer across provincial borders. Look at all the illegal smoke shakes, Sarnia Ontario for example. There's a reason that Border Guards ask about alcohol or tobacco almost every time one returns to Canada. Gasoline is a little harder to sell in a black market as refineries are beyond most peoples abilities to build and operate in their backyard. Tax exempt gas used to be available at separate pumps for farmers, lawn mowers etc. but were discontinued as you could easily use it in your vehicle.

Sunny Cornwall, UK.
I've said it afore but will say it again. If everyone stopped smoking (all kinds) and drinking tomorrow then in a month's time the Government would find themselves in a right old pickle regards loss of revenues.
What really needles me is the tax free bars in the Houses Of Parliament....where our elected 'elite' can (and often do) eat and drink themselves silly for next to nothing!
Regards,
Jay.

Lawmaking is very stressful work. You can't really expect them and their families to be subject to the laws they pass for you...they need a few perks to help ease the suffering of their selfless public service.

Oddily enough here in Finland and similarly in Estonia there were and still is black market for gasoline as well,so to say folks who live near the Russian Borderline went over and bought fuel for a half price in Russland and then go reselling it when they back home free.Too much hussle shall I say( I live 60 miles away from bordercrossing btw

similarly Tax exempt Diesel fuel is still available at some filling stations but is strictly reserved for only farmer and lawn mover use( Customs Authorities are occasionally executing roadside fuel control raids and checking heavy haulers for use of tax free diesel-if caught then he may risk having very hefty fines up to 10 thousads $)

mikethompson That's a little alarmist don't you think? If a 6% increase in the cost of your pack of darts is creating this steamy underbelly tearing families apart you are just wrong.
If no one was arrested and locked up for smuggling cigarettes then I would say you're right. Unfortunately, creating the environment for crime to thrive, then punishing those who inevitably take the risk for money (which supports families,) is not fantasy. Prisons are full of people, real people, not just imaginary ones.

I have seen a picture of your cellar on another thread wyfbane, very nice. I am glad tobacco has a good shelf life.
Having a diverse selection of blends available and affordable to the general public allows the art of smoking to be developed. This forum really showcases that. Different blends for different moods, foods, times of day. It should be a pleasure available to everyone. I would hate to see pipe tobacco reduced to a few dozen blends, controlled by a handful of companies and priced exclusively for the wealthy.

I don't now that tobacco taxes relate directly to Brexit, but I do worry about UK "going it" alone. I'm not a UK citizen, and I don't understand it from the inside, but it looks like it is limiting, moreso than being part of EU, dealing with each nation piecemeal, lots of extra negotiations and steps. I hope it works out.

"Our National health service is struggling and to get it back on track it would take 4 billion pounds"
Hopefully people in any country contemplating similar idiocy are paying attention.

"I saw a discussion about the outlook for economic growth in Great Britain. It doesn’t look good."
The business model Great Britain used for its traditional levels of prosperity is no longer widely accepted, and they are struggling to find a suitable replacement. It is hard to sustain ambitious social programs with anything other than personal taxation under those unenviable circumstances.

Now that pipe smoking is not something that people do widely as a daily habit, it means that for those of us who are involved, there is an attribute of a hobby or skill to it. Giving people something to learn and achieve mastery in can make them enjoy it more.
On the other hand, the local grocery store started stocking Carter Hall and Prince Albert again. We gain a bit of strength when the hobby moves back into habit territory.

Here is an excerpt from http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/cost-of-cigarettes-budget-2017-philip-hammond-a8065566.html

On average, around 80 per cent of the price of a packet of cigarettes in the UK goes into the Government’s coffers – although it is as high as 90 per cent on some brands, according to the Tobacco Manufacturers Association, which lobbies on behalf of the industry.
Increasing numbers of smokers are buying their tobacco from abroad, with illegal imports a growing problem for HM Customs and Revenue – which estimates tobacco smuggling costs the UK taxpayer £2.4 billion a year.

So the end tax paid, adding the various taxes, amounts to about 500% of the product price. Yikes!

I think Brexit was one of those things that seemed right at the time, like mso i think the UK is going to struggle when the actual divorce is final. This country lacks anyone of substance to lead us into prosperity which is pretty sad when you sit and think about it.

Since you are a socialist country why doesn't your country do something like we did with our socialist programs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Works_Progress_Administration

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilian_Conservation_Corps

Both programs created jobs, improved infrastructure, and supported general economic growth. If a country's people are ruled so completely, they should at least be happy, and be able to afford a drink and smoke at the end of the day.

If that isn't the case it is hard to believe that it is do to incompetence, after all Britain almost ruled the world.
