Just curious: going to be maybe going into the US in February and might possibly bring a few tins back to Canada with me. I'm wondering - is the provincial tax calculated on the land border you use - ie. Ontario or Quebec, or is it based upon your province of residence? (That is IF I pay duty to begin with).

Yeah, I know about the 48 hours. This time I'm going to be passing through. For two or three tins they might just let me through versus doing all the paperwork for it, (I know my father often brings me microbrewery beer from Upstate NY and declared, he never pays duty on that little. But this time I'll be crossing in Ontario and I know the duty on tobacco is higher there than in Quebec. At the very worst, the cost comes out even with what I'd pay in Canada - if I find some bargains, I could pay less.

Do they really rifle through your luggage and check everywhere at the boarder? I didn't have anything with me, but when we crossed into Mexico and back several times, I don't remember them being very evasive. Maybe a dog stood next to my truck, but they definately didn't shake me down.
Maybe Canada is more strict or something?

Growing up just a couple minutes from the border, I'm well aware that hiding things is a bad thing to do. They can dismantle your car, and they don't put it back together again!
Absolutely. In 1984 or 5, after one too many smart assed responses to a new officer, I was seeing parts of my VW Rabbit being removed that I never knew were there.

Yeah - and let's just say their memory is VERY long! Burn them once, you burn yourself forever.
I've crossed many times with over limit alcohol and declare it every time. If you don't go overboard, they usually let you go.

I was crossing 5-6 times a week while playing in a summer box lacrosse league. Out of the blue one afternoon there’s a new guy playing twenty questions, after a bit of questioning about my duffel bags contents I said “ya got me, it’s heroin”.
That was a very bad move on my part.

I NEVER messed with the border guys when crossing. I went to college in Bellingham, WA and we would all go clubbing up in Vancouver. None of us wanted any imperial entanglements... lol

Fast forward to Dec, 2001. I got to do 3 TDY trips to Italy over 6 months. I WISH to GOD I smoked pipes then. As it was, I got 82 bottles of wine back in my foot lockers in the wake of 9/11. I can only imagine the amounts of tobacco I could have gotten back.

On the last trip out, I had 8 or 10 bottles in my carry on. The lady freaked out that my bag was overweight. "This bag weighs 28 Kilos! Your bag cannot weigh 28 Kilos!!!" Luckily my fellow Soldiers where there to distribute the weight. lol
